5. my husband
he's so disciplined and good natured

Bill W. & Dr. Bob who brought a better way of life to millions, in spite (or possibly because of) their deep human frailties

Ghandi who spoke truth to power and brought down an empire

the millions of souls all over the world who quietly and lovingly raise their children, care for their parents and help their neighbors with no thought of fame, glory or riches

12. I Have Many Heroes...
I admire some DU'ers

I admire people in my life

I admire many leaders in the civil rights movement

I admire many who have put their reputations if not even possibly their careers and lives on the line to oppose the war in Iraq.

I admire as heroes anyone who dares to stand up to power to support the "little guy/gal"

13. John Walsh
A crime victim who fought back, and made a difference.

But I'm disappointed that he sank into trash TV.

17. A few of mine are
Edited on Mon Apr-02-07 05:37 PM by hippywife
the man in my avatar and sig pic who embodied all that I hope to one day attain in my personal interactions with people close to me and with the world as a whole.

Fr. John Dear, Jesuit priest, who keeps Gandhi's teachings of nonviolence alive and puts himself out there for what he believes in the name of justice and peace.

MLK, Jr. who gave his life in the struggle for civil and human rights. Also an avid student of Gandhi's principles of nonviolence.

Russell Bennett, Pastor Emeritus of Fellowship Congregational Church in Tulsa, who has publicly stood for peace and justice in the world, who publicly stood for civil and human rights for gays, immigrants, and our Islamic brothers and sisters after 9/11. He was the founder of the Tulsa Interfaith Alliance more than 10 years ago and remained the president of that organization until he lost a tragic battle with colon cancer last year.

The Rev. Carlton Pearson, also of Tulsa, who after years of training at ORU and a close relationship with Oral Roberts, earned dejection and the wrath of the religious right and charismatic community when he had a vision and began preaching the gospel of inclusion and that hell is here and now on earth in the form of the damage and neglect of man on their fellow man. He lost his standing, his congregation, his church, and his personal savings. He has not retreated but is rebuilding his ministry based on justice and acceptance of all.

Dennis Kucinich who continues to speak truth to power and understands and promotes the concepts of world peace and justice while a member of a government body and citizen of a country which seem to have little use for or understanding of these concepts.

All of those who, while not personally effected in their lives, take a stand against hatred, bigotry, and injustice in their communities and the world at large.

Most of all, my heros are all those people who live under intolerable circumstances due to injustice and poverty and all they entail, who get up each morning and struggle against insurmountable odds just to survive another day.
