Going on 9 months in the woods.
How can you hate this? I'm looking out my window and everything is white and grey. The sky, trees and stone walls are grey. The snow on the ground and what is now falling is white. Very, very peaceful. We have had some brutally cold days but the heat is holding and this little cabin is really amazing. Great fireplace. Good guys who deliver the propane. (They have bets on how long I'll last here, but I think they are routing for me.) A red fox comes by everyday. Two does come to drink at the edge of the lake. My cats hybernate under every available lamplight and Gypsy seems to be in old dog heaven. There is a poem that my dad used to recite about this little place:

I will arise and go now,
And go to Innisfree.
And a cabin I will build there,
Of clay and whattles made.
And nine bean rows will I have there,
And a hive for the honey bee.
And live alone in the bee loud glade.

I am very lucky. I am very happy. I just had to write this. No response necessary unless someone has the rest of the WB Yeats poem. That I know existis and I can't find it. It says something about the city, I think. :-)

1. the lake isle of innisfree
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 04:55 PM by northzax
I will arise and go now,
And go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there,
Of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean rows will I have there,
A hive for the honey bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there,
For peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning
To where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a glimmer,
And noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet's wings.

I will arise and go now,
For always night and day
I hear lake water lapping
With low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway
Or on the pavements gray,
I hear it in the deep heart's core.

Innisfree was an island in Lough Gill...looks a little like this:

I hear it in the deep heart's core.

3. Sounds like heaven
Those of us stuck in the windowless cube farm are insanely jealous. :P I hope you take them all to the cleaners in the "how long will she last" pool.

Send me a picture sometime. I'll put it on the wall of my cubicle. Every available surface is covered with pictures and postcards from places I and my friends and family have been. When it gets to be too much for me I take my brain on little mini-vacations inside the pictures. :-) Sitting in front of a fire and watching the snow come down and waiting to see the critters come by sounds like a pretty good place to be.

4. Gee, need some company?
I think I could endure a place like that. :contented: (Need a smiley with a smile and BOTH eyes closed!)

What are you using for internet connectivity? Satellite. Solar power??? Or are you generating power from the propane???

8. We used to have Starband
I lived in the Sierras at about 5500 ft. a good hour and a half 2 hours from civilization :) Starband worked fantastically, I just had to go brush the snow off during the heavy storms.

I miss my mountain hideaway. Cali was way too expensive, now Im down in the heart of the beast.. living in a concrete jungle.

It was bliss while it lasted.

what part of the world is this woods in? Sounds wonderful.

And how do you make a living? Subsistence? (Not with the propane guys coming in, I guess.)

7. Enjoy, Raven. What else can I say?
I myself pine for the Big Sky Country, myself, and similar surroundings.

11. tom_paine, the snow is settling and the deer are near
Warmed enough here that the snow (about 3 feet of it) is deflating a bit but still beautiful. The hound and I encounter deer right here in Tiny Town.

Sky still the bluest blue and BIG.

Hope Raven is snug in her nest. Hope tom gets a whiff of northern air, clean and cold.

Sunset was beautiful here today.

Peace to you all. We all deserve some.

9. Oh, you guys, thanks
for the rest of that poem! As for the internet...I have a dial up connection and, once you get used to slow, it's ok. How about a gathering here next summer?

12. Sign me up...
for the gathering. I'll bring cookies. :-)

P.S. I'm in touch about dialup. But it's nice to know I'm not the LAST person on earth with a dialup connection. :-)

10. I so envy you.
I wish I could live in the woods again, but DH's disease keeps us close to civilization. Enjoy every minute of it, Raven.
