Is dying your hair pink and green at 26 childish??
I'm just about to fire off a scathing email to my son. He's coming home in about a month and I want him to cut it off or dye it back before I see him!! I thought all the piercing, dying, tattoo-ing stuff was over YEARS ago! It didn't bother me at all when he was younger; I did stuff like that and so did his dad. Isn't 27 too old or am I hopelessly out of touch??

1. Hopelessly out of touch. :-)
As a 27 year old, I still get a kick out of pissing off my "elders" by doing stupid shit like this.

My advise? Don't make a big deal about it because the more you do, the more strange shit he is going to do, something my mother hasn't quite figured out.

Childish? Yes. I refuse to grow up. ;-)

9. Thanks......I'll take your advice.....
Since you're his age. My instinct was not to get too bent about it,but I let my emotions take over......and ya know the more I think about it, the more I think he wants to look really funky when he comes back East. He and his girlfriend live in Berkeley and he hasn't been back home to this VERY conservative area in over a year............so maybe this is his way of emphasizing the differences in lifestyle. But.............Jeebus!! He is such a handsome man and has such beautiful black hair!!!! Sob!

13. Don't worry, it won't last
and he'll have his black hair again. Then when he's old it'll turn white and blue anyway. At least he's not shaving his head like some men do. Maybe he just want to shock everyone. After all being from Berkely you have to have that reputation as hip, political savy, in-the-know, and of course "anti-establishment".

20. You know, I was at Berkeley
and I had blue hair. This was more than a decade ago.

"Differences in lifestyle", nothin'. He's trendy. And behind the curve, at that!! ;)

3. heheh....
No, I don't think so. But I live in Santa Cruz. I see 50 year old's with wildly-dyed hair.

Plus letting him know it bugs you won't really change his mind - it will just create tension.

My mother tried to rip out my earring when I first got it (at age 18, in 1979). The next year, she was buying me earrings for xmas. If he just got it done recently, let it go. It won't help for you to condemn him - it'll just pick a fight that you can't really win.

Just my $.02

4. When I was 26, I gave myself a tall blue mohawk
I was drunk.

I let it grow out, but the blue stripe remained for some time.

 It was the '80's.

5. If he doesn't live with you
then it's not for you to say.

Why does it bother you so much?

Does he have a job, pay his bills, stay out of jail?

7. Yep, that'd be the right thing to do
If he's otherwise responsible and is a decent person, what's it to you what his hair color is?

As others have said, the more you make a big deal out of it, the more your son will enjoy doing it.

6. I'm almost 32 and I'll occasionally do highlights
Including blue and green if it matches my wardrobe.

It's not done in a wild way, I do have a job to keep... but I still do it. :D

8. It's his hair; he can do what he wants with it.

Which is a more diplomatic way of saying, leave the guy alone!

10. Yes it's childish
And that's OK. Nothing wrong with a little youthful fun to keep your head straight.

12. according to astrology, you're not an adult until 28-30
depending on your saturn return (the number of years it takes for saturn to circle back to the exact degree it was in when you were born).

I should say it's the first OPPORTUNITY for adulthood---you could miss it of course and then have to wait until 56 or so.

Usually something big happens around age 28 or 29 or so (like getting married, or a career change, etc.)

15. Hey......thanks for all the good advice.
It's ironic........he just called just as I was typing a response................and his girlfriend, who came back east for the holidays came home and said she was still in love with her old boyfriend who she saw when she got back here. He is DEVASTATED!! I told him that he should give her some time to settle back in before he decides to move out. He is crying and I don't know what to do for him!!! I feel like such an effing jerk for worrying about his stupid hair for one second. My poor boy. Shit, now I'm crying.

23. Someone's "Fashion-Senselessness" Is Harmless (Mostly)
Pick your battles wisely. And be sure to take LOTS and LOTS of pictures that you can "proudly" display and bring out in photo albums in... say... about 10 or 15 years. (I think you know what I'm getting at.)

You may not win this battle this year... but time will prove our your wisdom.

21. Well said!!
My poor boy.........(see above post about getting dumped.) Anyway.....I don't know why I cared so much........he is so cute just looking the way he looks, but you all are right.........he's a grownup, so I'll just love him when he comes home. I'm sure alot of my feelings were about the area in which I live, too......so conservative.........My God..some of my neighbors are Amish!! At any rate, I'll lay off........and abandon the idea of asking him to wear a hat when he comes home. Yes.......I'm embarrassed to say that I considered that!!! What has happened to me? I used to be so cool!

Hey, at least he isn't living in your basement. Just let him know that the more he screws around with his hair, the less likely it will last....
