We must stop referring to the media as "whores"
It is dishonoring an ancient, noble profession. I'm sure that if we put our heads together we can think of something offensive to refer to the pundits and faux reporters that doesn't smear hard-working people.

3. I'm not sure it is noble
it may be honest and I don't think it should be illegal, but come on, it's f***ing for a living. It's lowdown and dirty and digusting. Think about it - f***ing ANYONE for a price. It boggles my mind. Same with media whores.

18. Hey skittles...
Someone in my family is a sex worker, as is one of my closest friends.

It's only disgusting because society deems it so. It's a public service. Sex is fun, sex is healthy. Some people don't have the opportunity (or desire) to maintain a sexual relationship, and prostitution is a way for them to be sexually satisfied.

As far as I'm concerned, flipping burgers for a multibillion dollar company for $6 an hour is far more degrading and demeaning than fucking for money.

We're all prostitutes to one degree or another, so let's not pretend otherwise.

I agree, who is being degraded more, the college girl screwing her way to a PhD or the kid looking at the next 10 years wearing a paper hat?

32. If you believe in a woman's right to use her body as she wants to...
...you can't judge a woman for choosing to offer it in exchange for money.

Please remember that there are several sex workers, and their friends and relatives, who are members of this board. They don't judge how you live your life, so why do you feel it's appropriate to openly judge and condemn them?

True, some prostitutes don't want to do what they do, and that's unfortunate. There are sex-workers who are organized in every city, working to rid the streets of underaged and abused prostitutes. Who better, really? Who else would have reason to care so much?

However, many choose to do what they do, and that's their right. In many ancient societies, even up to and including the Klondike, prostitution was an honourable and respectable profession. It's only our conservative, "family-values" culture which paints prostitutes in such a bad light.

A woman I know earns about $300,000 a year, as a call-girl. For the record, I don't have a physical relationship with her--she's a friend of my wife's from school. She got into hooking when she was in university, and continues with it despite having a Graduate Degree and a full-time, lucrative profession. She loves sex, loves to travel, she's single, and she loves money. She has a bunch of Third World children she sponsors, who she probably wouldn't if she didn't earn so much extra money. I'm sure they don't care where the money comes from. She has had many of the same clients for literally over a decade, and she fucks them for money because she enjoys it, and because these people become part of her life. We've had lengthy discussions about what makes her "tick". Sometimes the sex is good, sometimes it isn't. She says she finds something in each client, that she enjoys. Sometimes it's their personality, sometimes it's their celebrity. She says there's seldom a man she can't find *something* likeable about. She never gets treated disrespectfully (except by people who say she's 'disgusting' online), and she feels she's providing a necessary service. She takes pride in her job, and in the way she does busines (she's safe, clean, discreet, and personable). Sex for money doesn't have to be 'disgusting'. Sometimes, it's the only way it works. Not all clients are 'dirty old man' types, who can't get laid. Not all hookers are crackwhores who are regularly beaten by their pimps. The rules change when money is involved, and not necessarily for the worse. For one thing, there's very little chance of "misunderstanding" the terms of the relationship. Each side understand the boundaries and conditions perfectly.

Skittles, I think you're being unfair. Perhaps if you took some time to research modern prostitution, you might understand my point. I'll be happy to point you in the direction of some interesting reading, if you're willing to challenge your stereotyped ideas of prostitution.

Even if you don't want to do that, could you please consider not being so offensive to the sex workers on this board?

Remember, not only isn't it society's business who we sleep with, it's not society's business why we sleep with them.

33. well, no
to have sex with someone purely for money IS F***ING GROSS and you are foolish if you PRETEND OTHERWISE.

No pretending about it. Obviously, for you it's gross. That's just fine as you're entitled to find it gross for you. It is clearly not gross for others. Everyone is entitled to feel that for themselves a certain activity that harms no one is offensive, but no one is entitled to find certain activities that harm no one as gross or bad or offensive for others especially when those people don't feel that way themselves.

Everyone has different beliefs about sex. Some people think that sex should only occur to procreate. Some believe that it should only occur with a partner that one is in love with. Some believe that it should only be for physical and emotional enjoyment. Some believe that it should only be for physical enjoyment. Some believe that it should only occur between two people. Some believe that it should only occur between two people of the opposite sex. Some believe that anything goes whether it's for love, enjoyment, money or procreation. However, no one has the right to define how sex should be viewed for everyone based upon their own personal beliefs. What consenting adults do in private for what reasons which harms no one is not and should not be the concern of anyone else.

6. The term "media whores"
doesn't refer to everyone in the media. It refers to the ones who have sold out for a variety of reasons. Real journalists like Christiane Amanpour, Bill Moyers, and Paul Krugman are in the media but they are not whores, so "media whore" is not applied to them.

"Media whore" refers to the so-called jouralists who ARE NOT "honoring an ancient, noble profession" and who are NOT "hard-working." Therefore, I think the use of the term for particular individuals is entirely appropriate.

The noble profession gives "stress relief" while the media gives us just stress. Brown-nosers would be a better term. Especially since we all know someone like that.

Sadly, muckrakers no longer applies.

I still like toadies. Everyone knows what it means and it is so damn true of them.

29. ancient, noble profession
Edited on Tue Jan-13-04 02:23 PM by WorstPresidentEver
We are not the one who are dishonoring the profession it is the WHORES who are doing it. That is why we call them WHORES, because they are WHORES. It is an accurate description. Should the mainstream/corporate media suddnenly grow backbones and return to the vaules of the profession, then we would stop calling them WHORES because they would have then stopped acting like WHORES.
