:-(...they tried to kick my door in, but couldn't, so they kicked my side window out. this is so disheartening, after just having had a car burglary in september. they didn't take anything, tho...strange.
anyone else have a break in where nothing was taken? reluctantly, i'm getting bars on my windows tomorrow...
sorry...i have to vent. as a single mom, i feel so violated.

Only make sure that they open easily from the inside (only) for emergency escape (if needed).
I had a break in years ago when I lived in the city (as a poor student), where they took nothing --- they came back (I am not trying to scare you) --- but I had so hardened the back door that they had kicked in that it was (nearly) imposssible to break in again there (they didn't manage). Everywhere else was too visible and they gave up.
Most burglars like to get in and out fast, taking only valuable items that they can easily sell. But many are also on drugs and they can get desperate. My sister got broken into a few years back and they left all the big stuff --- computers, tvs and took cameras, jewelry and such.
Hardening your place is good, but you might consider other options too.

We had a break in about 7 years ago. The only thing taken was some of my wife's jewelry, most of which was worthless except for some deep sentimental value. We weren't home when that happened.
A few months later, someone broke into the apartment downstairs. Some marks on our door indicated that the thieves tried to break into ours, too. At the time, my wife was alone, in the shower, and our infant son was asleep in his crib.
We moved, and I would advise you to do the same if you can.

It's terrible to have some anonymous jerk trespass like this. Move your valuables (and/or sentimental objects) to another location for awhile. A safe deposit box is ideal if you have access to one.
As a victim of a recent burglary I want to encourage you to get anything of value out of your top dresser drawer. That's the first place my burglar went...and he/she got watches and jewelry that had been in the family (made me sick for days and days)! I felt so stupid and violated. My thief took the largest suitcase in the house and filled it with cameras, computer, leather coats, ... need I say more?
Also, please file a police report. My thoughts are with you! This is an awful experience to go through. :hi:
