My son had an MRI today...
of the brain no less...

All clear!

He had a brain tumor removed last April. Three days in the hospital. Never lost a beat (well he was kind of out of it for a day).

Medical technology is absolutely amazing. I marvel everyday. It has been a surreal experience. He is very unlikely to ever experience a reoccurance. So I'm just celebrating a bit.

4. going home from my sis's MRI (looks clear, but she was put in crooked)
we saw CBS and news vans lining up at the next-door hospital for the cougar-mauled woman, who was recuperating there.

And yes, it is nice to have the technology to treat and diagnose these conditions.

9. That's great news!
I remember how scared I was when I got my MRI and CAT Scan on my brain. The doctors found a very, very small (compared to normal) aneurism in my brain. My parents and I were expecting worse. Thankfully the doctors caught it early. Otherwise I'd probably be dead right now. They can't operate on it, though. :(

I'm glad your son's MRI turned out better than mine did. :)

18. The not so gory details...
Hedgetrimmer...all our best to you as you wait for the 26th to come. Waiting is tough.

As for a bit of detail on my son...He had a dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (aka DNT). Fortunately a very benign growth.

It was in his left temporal lobe amidst the speech and memory areas. Actually his main memory transferred to the right side of the brain from the standard left side due to the injury. Pretty smart of the brain, isn't it? They navigated around the speech areas.

It wasn't too big, about 2cm around.

He had the surgery on a Tuesday and was home on Friday. He was just about back to full speed by the following Monday. Didn't miss a beat. No impairment at all. He's left with just a small scar in front of his ear.

It'll be a year in April and he's doing great...just the typical sullen teenage boy. He had a great and gutsy attitude about the surgery, dismissing it as "no big deal" and just went about his business. It was about six months from discovery to surgery. I don't know if I would've done as well.

Though it was brain surgery, it was an easy day at the office for the neurosurgeon, and he put us all at ease (as much as possible) about the procedure.

We'll be doing the annual MRI for awhile. We were very fortunate and I never would've believed it, but a brain tumor is (well can be) far from being the worst thing that could happen to you.
