Ouch! There is now a National Weather Service warning out for New Hampshire. It says that at -40 you get frostbite in 15 minutes. People up here say that they have never seen it this cold before. I think I'm pretty well prepared for this but any suggestions (short of hibernation!) would be greatly appreciated. :hi:

near Mount Monadnock. We seem to get the same weather as the "north country" probably because we are so high up.

6. stay hydrated Raven!
And if you must go out, be sure and have a scarf of some sort to breathe through. If you wear glasses, wear them if you go out also. Glasses are a pain as they fog up when you come in, but they do offer a bit of protection for your eyes.

Dehydration of the slightest sort can inhibit your body's ability to hold heat. So lots of fluids, of the non-caffeine sort should be the order of the day.

If you have extra towels, they can be a help in windows. An extra bit of insulation in that sort of wind chill temp can make a world of difference.

Is the cabin of log or are there interior walls? If log, you are about to find out if there are any weaknesses in the chinking. Might look around for temporary quick fix materials today. Electric outlets? Sometimes they can allow for a nasty draft. Just be aware.

Don't touch the walls and windows tonight. Keep an eye on the cat; they will usually be in the location which is most comfortable. Take a cue from that. (Besides, you might look cute with a lampshade on your head!;-) )

I'll be at work today but usually check the 'puter at lunch and in the evening. Let us know how you are doing, OK? And if it is cold in the cabin, put a hat on and keep it on till you feel too warm. Not bad to sleep in them when it is really cold if the cabin gets chilly.

Do stay in touch and let your evilDUer fans and friends keep tabs on you through this cold snap. Havocdad is from Vermont and says the cold there can be pretty nasty as it is generally more humid there than Montana in the winter.

Take care, have some juice and keep your hat on!

your fan from Montana,
havocmom

7. One more thing if you go outside today
Keep you skin covered. Pull the hat down low, pull the scarf up, wear your glasses/sunglasses. It's livible. We have these sort of fun temps all the time up here in Fargo.

Hell, a few years back we were dropping below -40 F *ambient* (i.e., the temperature, not the windchill).

And if you don't have to go out, don't go out!

(Also, as a smoker, watch tobacco, alcohol, and all of those other things that will tend to drain the circulation away from your extremeties.)

8. Fargo, huh?
Hey, neighbor! I'm here in 'West Dakota' as some locals call it.

Coldest day I had to deal with was in western Montana. Air temp was -52 and the wind was howling. They put the wind chill at -72. Hey, after about -40, it feels pretty much the same. Ya just stay in. Any yes, cover everything if you have to go out. Don't be out long. I was a lot younger then and the 15 minute walk to work truned into 25 minutes that would've rendered me hypothermic if not for all the layers of clothes, ski mask, glasses.

Raven, have you a slik scarf? Silk is excellent to tuck into your neckline even indoors if it is cool. Keeps you body heat in without making you too warm.

9. Hey Raven
"have you got enough wood?" That's become the standard winter greeting here in beautiful Derry, New Hampshire.

-40, jeez that's cold.

We will probably have penguins at Hampton Beach before the winter's out if this keeps up.

13. Hi Raven...that's darn cold!!!
I was talking with my brother last night, he lives in Massachusetts and it's the worse cold he's felt in a long time, also sick with the flu.

I say keep the oven going today, bake some cookies...I'd definitely be making Kale Soup, a big pot of it, just having that stuff makes you feel healthy,
It's definitely a Soup Day...hug your dog too and keep close and warm friend.

I don't think I could take anything under 32'for being outside, after living here in Florida for 24 years...my blood as thinned out...and most snowbirds pick January to visit here.

But it's been just perfect here, 70s' days and 50s' night, give or take high 40s' and high 60s'....love that, but folks want the 80s when they are down.

You take good care...
Jane, becareful in that kind of cold, it's not healthy!
Hope you got backup if anything happens...that's just too cold!
Keep intouch and let us all know how you are doing! :loveya:

15. Thanks Crew and thanks everybody for the good advice!
I've got plenty of wood and water and food and batteries. The propane tank was filled yesterday and will work even if the electricity goes off. The car has a full tank of gas and I put some of that dry gas in the tank. I've got my cell phone charged and have some good friends who live down the raod. I think I'll be fine and will keep in touch.

Being from Cape Cod...we even had icebergs in those cold temps., all frozen in the harbor of Mattapoisett and along the shore line, and along with the wind some pretty awesome snow drifts too.

Thanks for checking in with your good plans...I feel better but still keep intouch when you can....glad you got good neighbors too!

Here's A Warm Hug Jane!

19. Layers, Layers and a face mask
I went to school on the Illinois prarie and we would get this sort of brutal, dangerous cold, the kind where the cops patrol around looking for drunks so they won't freeze to death. The kind that makes it look like you are in Dr. Zhivago. I lived a mile off campus, so I dressed in layers. Like TWO sets of long johns and a pair of heavy jeans, thermal undershirts, a sweater, a down coat, a heavy wool overcoat. Two pair of socks and a pair of heavy boots. I also had a suede face mask that I would wear along with an Army surplus helmet liner and a ski hat. Since I was a theatre major, I could show up to the dressing rooms and unpeel some of the layers.

which is ridiculous for January in Northern Alberta.

It's going to screw up everything next summer. We need the melt in the spring for the wheat crops, not now.

23. Well now NHPRadio is saying -50 tonight!
Very strong, gusty winds. -50! I can't even imagine what that feels like. If I get through this I think I'll have paid my dues. The propane delivery guys have bets among themselves about how long I'll stay so the guys who are pulling for me come by every week to check my tank and make sure I have enough fuel. My friend down the road who has been here forever told me last week that he thought I was "pretty tough and a little crazy". You would think I was living in a tent!

26. All hell has just broken out here!
It's 2:10 pm and the front is coming through. The temp has dropped almost 10 degrees in the last 10 or 15 minutes and the wind has picked up and is howling now. I have this program called WeatherBug and I would recommend it to everyone. It apparently has weather stations all over...there is one at the school in town, so you get very accurate readings. It also alerts you when there is a national weather service warning or alert. The WeatherBug is free and I think it will be my constant companion tonight! :-)

...in Montana for a dozen years. Don't go out in your car unless you have to, and let someone know when you do. As long as your dwelling is sorta warm, you'll be okay there.

I recall our old furnace running full blast 24/7 trying to heat our Victorian house. Yikes. What a mistake that was.

34. I use Weatherbug ALOT
More so in the summer during thunderstorms but it's a handy thing to have anytime of year. Last summer when we had that outbreak of tornadoes aka Tornado Tuesday
when there were more than 60 twisters in one night just 40 miles west of where I am, Weatherbug kept me well informed on that dangerous and very scary night.

If you do have to go out for any reason, dress in many layers of clothing and always, always carry a winter safty kit in your vehicle and a blanket or two in the trunk.

29. The trees are just swaying here!
The snow has stopped and the sky is blue again. The temp went up 1 degree. Funny, funny weather! I don't know about you, but everything is less scarey in the daylight. Just as I have typed this, the clouds have come in again, the wind has picked up and the temp has dropped again. We must be right in the path of this front. When it gets dark, which is in about 1 1/2 hours from now, I'll only be able to imagine, but don't worry Crew, Gypsy can pee in the house as far as I am concerned! I'm not goin out there! :-)

30. same here
actually 50-, and I have to start the car tomorrow morning to drive the kids to school. With a bit of a walk to the garage. If it is really bad, I'm going to bring the kids in late. I just hope we don't lose the power, the wind is really howling right now. But we brought a bunch of wood and kindling in and have both wood stoves roaring.

Advise: as long as you are out of the wind, you should be okay. If not, call someone now, and ask them to check on you later.

31. Cooool. But what's the actual air temp going to be?
I spent several years at Purdue University in central Indiana. I remember many winters walking back from classes or visiting friends when the the actual temp was around zero (sometimes -10), but the windchill would be -40 or so.

It wasn't bad at all, really. In some twisted psychotic way I miss the experience -- a little. Especially being out at night in it, everything is crisp, the snow crunches louder etc.

The main thing is to keep the wind off your skin as much as possible. That means long underwear, good hat, wear a scarf around your entire face, just leaving your eyes exposed. I found that was enough if I was keeping a brisk pace. These days, being the weeny I am now, I'd probably put on a pair of ski-bibs over my jeans and call it good enough.

I think you're in for a unique experience -- enjoy it. I do hope the heat in your abode stays on, that's an experience you don't need!
