Anybody remember Ultravox? |
|
circa 1986? Would they still be relevant?
ALL FALL DOWN. When I was a boy there's a dream that I had That a war if it's fought was for good against bad And I woke up to find that the world had gone mad And we'd all fall down.
And I feel like a child again, sitting observing You're toying with power, your fingers are burning You're pushing so hard that the worms won't be turning We'd all fall down.
While you try to pretend you're a god upon high With your party ideals and your squeaky clean lies When it comes to the crunch, you're no smarter than I And we'll all fall down.
Well, look in the mirror and what do you see An American, Russian, a soldier or me When you've all pressed the buttons just where would you be When we all fall down.
It gets harder to see just what future's in store for us Hard to see through all the wool you pull over us Words that you give us are just words to console us We'll all fall down.
And what will you do when you pull the release When the sound of the thunder has drowned out the pleas 'Cause after all that was your idea of peace When we all fall down.
No sun for a world that once stood so tall No wind's going to blow and no rain's going to fall No flowers for graves, in fact no graves at all When we all fall down.

8. Well they formed about 10 years after 1968 |
|
So that would make you about 30 when this song was released.;-)

6. HELL YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
|
U-Vox is one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITES!!!
However, I must disclose that I'm a fan of the pre-Midge days, when John Foxx was the vocalist. I actually own the first three LPs (pre-Midge) on CD. I found these pre-WWW, which was very difficult considering that they were never released in the US.
If you can get your hands on Systems of Romance (1978), do so. It is a synth-pop CLASSIC. Let's put it this way: if not for Systems, you would not have had the "New Romantics" of the early 80s (Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet) OR Gary Numan's whole 'electro-man' phase (he of "Cars" fame).
Ultravox RULES!

7. Didn't Ure write "Do they know it's Christmas" |
|
I know he was involved in Band Aid, and the music certainly sounds like his.
I agree that his solo work is a bit preachy, but he's always been politically charged.
I bought a new one ( "Ingeneuity" ...I think 1999 or so)...It's intolerable!:puke: Who's this new guy?

11. These guys are staples on my Goth/New Romantic radio show... |
|
(see link in my sig if you're interested in tuning in).
I love both 'stages' of Ultravox, both with and without John Foxx.
Foxx's solo LPs are great, if you ever come across them. I have them all.
Hey, trivia fans, what were Ultravox (with John Foxx) called before they changed their name to Ultravox? Can you name the Tinpan Alley song they covered?

Did you know that their version of "Ain't Misbehavin'" was originally recorded for a porn movie soundtrack? I forget where I read that, so it may or may not be true...
