84. Sadly, Some DU Members Have Made It Abundantly Clear

on many occasions that they have difficulty in comprehending many aspects of Queer America. It's still unclear to me whether this CALLOUSNESS is from a lack of understanding or a genuine lack of caring.

In general, a person's ignorance of a situation is a signal that they need to be educated and informed. Most of the time, this lack of MATURITY and lack of understanding is through no fault of their own. Often it's just a matter of someone needing to take the time to directly explain the reality of the situation.

Sometimes we only need to prod them to look inward and to question themselves and they will see that they have been wrong and unfair. Clearly, someone's overall maturity will play a big part in this process.

Obviously I'm concerned when someone lacks understanding or when they lack empathy... HOWEVER, my biggest concern is when some folks are absolutely unwilling to even consider the points that are made by others.

It's also distressing to see how some folks absolutely REVEL in flaunting their blatant disregard for the feelings of others. I'm often amazed at the apparent PRIDE some folks take in their WILLFUL anti-social behavior. It's frustrating to see how some people will express outright GLEE in ridiculing what Queer Americans must endure. They express uncontrollable DELIGHT in provoking others with their dismissive and belittling "get-over-it" type of philosophy.

Although it's difficult to comprehend the exact reasons why anyone would do this, I'm convinced that some people see it as a "game" and intentionally try to torment Queers for the sport of it. I've seen this type of behavior before. It's not unique to any one person here and is quite common in chat rooms and on other Usenet forums. --- The fact is, these types of people are everywhere... not just here at DU... it's a fact of life that Queer Americans continue to deal with every day.

You know... sometimes I'm tempted to just "give up" on some folks. I ask myself "why bother" because it's clear that NOTHING that I say or do will make a bit of difference with X-person or Y-person. --- BUT, THAT WOULD BE WRONG!!

Why? Because even though my efforts may FAIL with X-person and Y-person, those very efforts just MIGHT have an effect on Z-person.

So, even though it may seem like an impossible task to change the minds of even the cruelest people, I honestly believe that our efforts are ultimately NOT in vain.

By continuing to explain (politely and firmly and consistently) we can make a difference with folks who ARE listening and absorbing the "object lesson". The ones who refuse to listen and who continue to act-out are actually "learning tools" and examples of what unacceptable behavior actually looks like.

If we don't give up trying to teach the "unteachable," others will quietly observe and absorb the lessons. (Again... I'm not referring to any one person here... I'm talking about the many folks we run into in person and online.)

Don't give up hope. Keep fighting the good fight. (And always obey DU rules. :hi: It's often difficult to avoid attacking the person when you really INTEND to attack the message... but a calm approach often helps. :hi:)

I have to say that I, too, find this material kind of funny...in a really absurd, pathetic way (and I'm a gay man). You guys know, of course, that there are different kinds of humor, and different ways of interpreting something as humorous. Obviously it's not *intended* to be humorous, it's dead serious. But I think it's the complete absurdity of the visual portrayals of gay men and Lesbians in this material, contrasted with the fact that it's not supposed to be funny, that makes me chuckle. Also the visual style of this man's illustrations is so grounded in the 1960's, so outdated looking, that makes it funny too, in a way. It tends to be a clue that this man's thinking is decades is out of date.

Don't get me wrong folks. I also find this material depressing and horrible; but I also think that its sheer ridiculousness will be clear to many people who come across it, and the "message" it contains will fall on deaf ears for that reason. I see this material as symptomatic of the increasingly shrill and irrational tone of the anti-gay bigots, and the more they become that way, the more the reasonable majority of people will ignore their message of hate.

But I think some of you have been unfair to Kamika. I don't think she's elaborated on *why* she finds this stuff funny; maybe if she did a better job of that, you'd have less reason to press her so hard on the matter. As I said, I find it funny too, but in a very particular way.

That jerk-off has been around for about 30 years with his "Chick Tracts," little tiny comic books that religious fundies leave on people's windshields.

Somewhere in cyberspace, there also exists a website with viciously accurate parodies of Chick tracts--so viciously accurate that Chick tried unsuccessfully to get the site shut down, claiming copyright infringement. There was no infringement, though, just an artist who could copy Chick's style with a photographer's eye for detail!

My favorite Chick tract is the one where Bob (the protagonist with the pencil mustache) explains to a Catholic that the early Christians hid the real Bible because the Catholics were pushing their "false" Bible.

He never does explain how Martin Luther found the hidden "real" Bible, or why it looks suspiciously like the Catholic Bible, with a few books missing and some minor alterations.

I tell ya something Rab, I am tired of having sleepless nights because I lay there wondering why so many progressive people are so against me, because of who I have fallen in love with. I certainly understand why the right hates us. I have this ongoing nightmare, of being somewhere out in the scrub with Sapphocrat. The car breaks down, and we are stuck. I can't get a reception on the cell phone, so I can't call anyone for help. Next thing you know, there is this really beefy guy smashing a window and dragging my partner out of the car.

I won't go on with the nightmare, because it does upset me way to much. But what causes these nightmares is simply the nightmare existence us queers are made to live with. Because people forget that we are people too, and prefer to throw slanderous remarks at us, or laugh at comic strips which actually teach hate and intolerance, or refuse to give us the rights we were born with.

You said in an earlier post that you actually think it is funny too, because of how stupid it is, but you know what, Rab? There are some really stupid people out there who take this shit seriously, so much so that they will go out hunting for gay people. That is why I am so upset about this entire thread. While I'm not gay, so I'll never know directly the pain of being gay in a society that doesn't accept it, I hang out and work with a lot of gay people - and these are mostly gay Christians, some of them ministers - so through them, I understand the problems (though of course never as fully as them). I've marched in the gay pride parade in NYC with my church.

I laugh at Chick because he condemns Almost EVERYTHING - as I said a couple times already, even I am condemned by him from so many directions that I can't possibly take him seriously, and I'm a non-gay Christian.

I don't discount that some people take this guy seriously - and certainly in the world you have far more to fear than I, even though we are equally condemned. And I've never said that Chick is right.

126. My fundy missionary B/SIL adopted an infant last year.

They are head-honcho southern bapt missionaries in Mexico. I have personally heard them make very derogatory remarks about the Indians they are trying to convert.

It was very obvious that they have no respect for them unless they become southern bapt. The little girl that they adopted as a newborn is full-blooded Indian.
It makes my heart ache to see how they treat her. She is only a year old, but she is already being spanked and hand-slapped, especially over food dropping from the highchair.

I spoke up and was promptly told that Abbie WILL learn to obey. The child is not acting like a typical 12 mo in my opinion. She is already too timid, not wanting to explore things, and she doesn't even really babble, let alone try to talk; the only word I heard her try to say was amen.

I think they'll have their obedient child, but it will be one without a spark of creativity and curiousity. :(
