3. My personal opinion on the Queen...
I am torn between tradition and common sense. While I don't like the idea of a Queen being socially appointed as a supreme ruler...or more recently as a model of how we should be. I do like the tradition that I remember as a child. For instance, we had a picture of the Queen in the school gym. I also like hearing "God save the Queen" at official ceremonies, it reminds me I am not an American (No offence).

57. Ok. I thought there was a Vancouver Island. & a Victoria Island
My bad. I know some people who live up there, moved from other countries, and they all talk about how beautiful it is. They absolutely love it. But now I'm confused: For some reason I'm remembering the word Victoria and also remembering an island--is that town on Vancouver Island? If not, I'll have to find out where they live--Victoria or Vancouver Island.

Without knowing how beautiful you have heard it is, I'm still going to answer "yes".

From this spot, I can see the Pacific ocean, sandstone cliffs, snow-topped mountains, and Bald Eagles. If I step outside my patio door, I can probably see much more than that!

19. As a Canadian, Do these guys bother you?

THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
(Rick Moranis / Dave Thomas)
Bob & Doug McKenzie

(B: Bob D: Doug C: Chorus)

B: OK, good day. This is our Christmas part of the album. You can
play this
at your Christmas parties, or to yourself on Christmas Eve, if
there's
nothin' else to do.
D: Good day, eh? In case you thought, like, I wasn't on this part.
B: Oh, I guarantee ya you'd be on. OK, so good day. This is the
Christmas
part, and we're gonna tell ya what to get..um...your true love for
Christmas.
D: Look out the window!
B: Where? (chuckle) What are ya doin'?!?
D: Snow, hosehead!
B: Well, oh, it's the Great White North, and it's snowing 'cause it's
Christmastime. Hey, hoser!
D: What?
B: Here's a quiz. (chuckle) Quiz for Doug...
D: OK, I have my "thinking took" on.
B: Yeah, right. What are the "Twelve Days of Christmas"? 'Cause,
figure it
out, right? Christmas is when?
D: Um, the twenty-fifth...
B: Right. And, what's the twenty-fourth...Christmas Eve, right? So..
D: That's two
B: That's two. And, then what's after that? (pause) Boxing Day
D: Wrestling Day
B: Wrestl..get out!
D: Boxing Day, yeah, yeah.
B: That's three. Then, what's after that? Nothin'!
D: New Year's!
B: Four and what's...
D: New Year's Eve?
B: That's five. Where do ya get twelve?
D: Uh, there's two Saturdays and Sundays in there; that's four. So,
that's
nine. And three other days which, I believe, are the "mystery"
days.
(Music starts)
B: OK, this our Christmas song, just in case you don't know what to
get
someone for Christmas.
D: There's lots of ideas in here, so listen and don't get stuck!

(organ
starts) By the way, that's ME on the organ.
B: Oh, geez.
D: You start...
B: OK...

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me,
A beer.

D: On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me,
Two turtle-necks
B: And a beer.

On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me,
Three French toast
D: Two turtle-necks
B: And a beer.
D: There should be more there, eh?
B: Where? Oh, go!

D: Fourth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me,
Four pounds of back-bacon
B: Three French toast
D: Two turtle-necks
B: And a beer.
D: ...in a tree. See, you need more.

B: Oh..fifth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me,
Five golden tooks,
D: Four pound of back-bacon
B: Three French toast
D: Two turtle necks
B: And a beer...where?
D: (with Bob) In a tree.

B: OK, on the sixth...oo, go!
D: ..Christmas, my true love gave to me,
C: Six...
D: Six packs of two-four
B & C: Five golden tooks
C: Four...
D: Four pounds of back-bacon
C: Three...
B: Three French toast
C: Two...
D: Two turtle-necks
C: And a beeeeeeeeer...
B: And a beer (with Doug) in a tree. OK.

On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me,
Seven pack of smokes,
C: Nice gift!
D: Nice gift. Oh...six packs of two-four
B & C: Five golden tooks.
C: Four...
D: Four pounds of back-bacon
C: Three...
B: Three French toast
C: Two...
D: Two turtle-necks
C: And a beeeeeeeeer...
B: And a beer (with Doug) in a tree. Keep forgetting.
D: Whew! This should just be the "Two Days of Christmas"; it's too
hard for
us! Go, hoser.

B & D: On the eighth day of Christmas, may true love gave to me,
D: Eight comic books
(Chorus repeats right behind them, though one behind)
B & D: Seven packs of smokes
Six pack of two-four
B: Five...
C: (catches up) Five golden tooks
Four pounds of back-bacon
Three French toast
Two turtle-necks
ALL: And a beer...
B & D: On my tree.
B: Yeah, that beer is empty. OK, day, um...
C: TWELVE!
B: Twelve!
D: Good day, and welcome to day twelve..
(Chorus starts up and Bob and Doug join in)
ALL: Five golden tooks
Four pounds of back-bacon,
Three French toast
Two turtle-necks
And a beer in a treeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
D: Where'd you learn to do that?
B: Um, albums.
D: So, like, that's our song. Merry Christmas...
B: Merry Christmas!
D: And good day!
B: Good day! Ha-happy New Year, too.
D: Shhh!
B: OK, you know what you left out?
D: What?
B: Donuts!
D: Oh, no!
B: I told you to get donuts. Either on the ninth day, or the tenth
day or
the eleventh day, but I want donuts!
D: OK, the song's over! Merry Christmas, everybody!
B: ...or, on the twelfth day, you could've got me a DOZEN donuts...
D: So,..go out to the stores and get some presents!
B: You could've gone down, to, like, the good donut shops where you
buy a
dozen, you get another one free, and then it'd be thirteen for the
"Thirteen Days of Christmas"!
D: Next Christmas, you can get me a chain-saw!
B: Take off!
(As music fades:)
D: Boy, that song was a beauty. It...it moved me.
B: Yeah, I think it ranks up there with "Stairway to Heaven".
D: What?

When I was in High School, if you got got with anthing under 4 grams, the cops just made you chuck it, or they took it. That may just be in my town though. But in Vancouver there is Blunt Brothers, which is basically a pot cafe...after six the ashtrays come out and you can smoke pot. I've been to other cafe's where people just light up with out a care. And in Vancouver you will smell pot EVERYWHERE. Because people just walk down th street smokng it.

There was a team a looooong time ago that won the Cup - I think they were the Victoria Millionaires or something like that. But unfortunately the Canucks have never won, but they've gone on to the finals in both 1982 and 1994. And in 1994 they went to the seventh game of the finals and got beaten by the stinking Rangers, on a goal by stinking Messier (I'm pretty sure, but not positive, it ws him). They ARE going to win this year though.:toast:

Edited on Thu Jan-15-04 01:40 AM by Sufi Marmot
Per my browsing, Kamloops means "where the rivers meet" - I suspect in the Shuswap language.

Yes, Delta is part of the Fraser River delta.

BCFerries fare info I'm pretty sure they don't make you sleep on the deck, but I haven't done the Inside Passage or Discovery Coast Route yet so I'm not totally sure.. :-)

51. Coastal...what side?
When driving north from Victoria along the Trans-Canada Highway, you pass through several communities situated along the East coast (the coast that faces the rest of North America): Duncan, Chemainus, Ladysmith and Nanaimo. After Nanaimo there's Lantzville, Parksville, Qualicum and Qualicum Beach, Comox, Courtenay, Campbell River, and finally, Port Hardy. As a rule, the further North you go, the cheaper it gets.

If you turn left at Parksville, you will take the only direct route to the West Coast of the Island. You pass through Port Alberni which is based in the crux of a fjord, and eventually you'll get to Uculet or Tofino, depending on which way you turn. Both of those communities are becoming rahter gentrified, and very expensive, despite their remoteness.

Alternately, you can travel further North, past Parksville, and take a West-bound road to Gold River, and, beyond that, accessible only by 30+ miles of gravel road, Tahsis BC:

http://www.tahsisbc.com/

http://www.villageoftahsis.com/directions/index.html#overview_map

Tahsis is a town which was built around a mill which has recently closed. The deal with mill closures is the company guarantees to buy back worker property at what was paid for it when the mill was functional. The company then sells the property at a rate close to what it paid. So, if the town was created in, say, the '50s, you can pay '50s value on property there.

HOWEVER. You are remote. You are not guaranteed an infrastructure. In Tahsis, for example, there is no grocery store, full-service gas station, or hospital. My mom wanted to move there, and we wouldn't let her, because she's 70 and has a bad heart, so she may not have been able to get immediate medical attention if she needed it, although there is an ambulance service now.

A Doctor visits twice monthly, as does a dentist. There is a liquor store, because BC government liquor stores are mandated to be accessible to all British Columbians (but doctors aren't?!). I believe there is an elementary school, but the nearest highschool is in Gold River, about an hour away.

A friend of mine just moved there, to take over the local gas station, which also services the marina. He paid a shockingly low amount for a reasonably nice 2,000sqft split-level home with a couple of acres of forest.

Here's a recent MLS real estate page for the area, just to give you an idea. A quarter million US would be about three times as much as you'd be able to spend:

http://www.mls.ca/mls/listing.asp?gt=s&gc=64&L=1&T=RR&rType=HO&RBEM=0&RBEX=50&RBAM=0&RBAX=50&RPM=0&RPX=99999999&RJOIN=AND&PV=6&sort=A&pageType=S&propCount=6

If you find you don't have enough money left over to live comfortably, you can work at the local oyster farm.

Hope this has been informative.

P.S. Sorry, I'm busy the weekend you're moving.

47. We just had a rep from BC come to our store in Bellevue
I'd never met her before, so after we went through our business together, I told her about my Canadian husband, etc., so we got to chat about Canada for a while. It was very nice to talk about Via Rail, Quebec City and The Beachcombers (yes, all in one conversation) with someone who knew what I was talking about! :hi:

56. Well, I was there alone, so it was pretty hard to
fuck THAT up...

Although with me, ya never know!

Anyway, it's an amazing city. It's like being in Europe. Did I ever tell you about my Montreal stalker who actually followed me to Quebec City? It was weird, I was 21, he was like 75, or 165, I can't remember. He actually took my credit card slip from the Montreal Ritz Carlton's garden restaurant to get my name, then he called around in Quebec City to find me. He had come up to me to ask what I was doing there, and I had mistakenly told him I was traveling and was on my way up to Quebec.

Oh, I had a wild youth, I did, picking up senior citizens. I was WILD, man, just WILD! :silly:

Are they making any progress?

59. Let's Make a Deal.
If Canada gives us the province in which Michigan Governor - oh, I'm sorry, "Premier" - Jennifer Granholm was born, we'll give you our President.

That way, Granholm can say she was born in the United States, <sarcasm> and Canada will get what it deserves. </sarcasm>
