1. Ponytails for men are unacceptable. |
|
Im not Christian or anything but Im pretty sure if Christ had his hair in a band he would have a pretty bitchin' ponytail.
Facial hair should be neatly trimmed.
Didn't the wise men have beards? lol...now I'm nit-picking.

"Liberty University has always attempted to maintain a conservative standard in its approach to the arts and entertainment. Current policy for movie viewing allows for attendance at theaters but prohibits viewing of movies rated "R", "NC-17" or "X"."
Sounds like a fun time is had by all. :eyes:

3. Ironically named university |
|
Standard of Dress for WOMEN Hair and clothing styles related to counterculture (as determined by the Deans' Review Committee) are not acceptable. Dresses and skirts should be no shorter than the top of the knee (sitting or standing). Skirt slits should be modest; open slits should be no higher than the top of the knee, closed slits should be no higher than two inches from the top of the knee. Shoulder straps should be no less than two inches wide. Anything tight, scant, backless, see-through, low in the neckline or revealing the midriff (in any position) is immodest and unacceptable.
(now I am starting to get aroused just reading about those young coeds)
Slips should be worn under thin material. Body piercing is not permitted. Earrings and plugs are permitted in ears only.

You have to assume that the people attending it prefer that kind of environment. Personally I think they're nuts, but it's their choice.

The freedom of speech policy at "Liberty" University:
"Student participation in on-campus demonstrations, petitions or picketing is prohibited unless approved by Liberty University administration. The administration may also prohibit or restrict student participation in demonstrations, petitions or picketing at places other than on campus, where such participation would contradict or otherwise compromise the principles and policies of Liberty University."

8. Notre Dame has an interesting policy |
|
Notre Dame will expel students for having sex, either on or off-campus.
Last year, four football players were accused of a gang-rape. They claimed it was consentual. They were expelled because they had sex with the woman, not because of the allegations of rape!

|
Edited on Thu Jan-15-04 09:11 AM by Bertha Venation
I attended Los Angeles Baptist College in Newhall, CA. It's now The Master's College (and town name has changed to Santa Clarita, CA).
We had to sign a pledge, far simpler than Liberty's but with about the same scope, stating that we would not see movies (ANY movie), theatre, rock concerts, listen to rock & roll or any secular music other than classical, use the 52-card deck for any game, drink alcohol, smoke or otherwise use tobacco, use drugs, dance, have sex (including with ourselves), or engage in any PDA other than holding hands.
In defense of schools with these policies: it's wholly their prerogative. Students of these institutions subject themselves to the rules. It's not anyone's proper place to make fun of the schools or their rules or their students.

Don't remember much else, but after a semester of that, and learning nothing about engineering, he transferred out.

12. Wheaton College has similar rules |
|
When I was at WMU in K-Zoo, I was sort of a fundie my freshman year and was involved in IVCF. Two girls in our group had transferred from Liberty. I remember quizzing them about the rules and being shocked. I asked them why they transferred and they said it was to witness to unsaved students, since everyone at Liberty was born again. I couldn't believe the ban on R rated movies and rock music. I asked them, "How would anyone know what movie you went to, anyways?". They said that no one wanted to go to those movies or listen to rock music, that if they did, they probably wouldn't go to that school. They thought that the rules made it too easy for them and that God was calling them to live in the real world and make choices for themselves. I couldn't really fault them on their reasoning and they were really nice people.

13. I live right here in fabulous Lynchburg |
|
And to enforce these rules, Liberty has "spies" go around town looking for Liberty students engaging in such nefarious activities as watching R movies, and consuming alcoholic beverages. If they are caught, they are expelled.
Interestingly, when you go to a Lynchburg bar, the drunkest, most out of control people there are invariably Liberty students. They are more than happy to slur their way through a conversation with you once they feel secure that you aren't a spy. I think there is a high percentage of students there who go there because daddy told them they can go to an "evil" college and pay their own way, or go to Liberty for free.

They are even told not to play on the railroad tracks!
"The railroad tracks adjacent to the campus must be crossed only during designated times and at the designated crossing. At no time should pedestrians or vehicles go around the gates which block access to the tracks. Vehicles should never attempt to cross the tracks until it is obvious there is room to clear the tracks. As a safety precaution, individuals should never walk on or along any railroad tracks or attempt to cross over/under a stopped train. Violation of these safety policies may result in disciplinary action by the University and/or arrest by railroad officials.
Note: No student should ever attempt to cross a railroad trestle/bridge."
Give me a break!

I wonder if some exceptions are made for that!
Actually, there are constantly students walking across those tracks, and then across a busy road to get to the Walmart. So I don't think this one is enforced real well.

...put in the brochure to ease the minds of the type of parents who would send their kid there.
Honestly, why would Liberty care if half the student body died? They've already paid their tuition, and they'll probably get into heaven, so what's the big deal?
But, you'd think God would be watching out for His army, wouldn't you? I mean, wouldn't He stop the train if there were Liberty students on the tracks?

he put out a pamphlet entitled "Jesus had short hair". Hyles Anderson college in Illinois has almost identical rules as Liberty. A friend's daughter attended school there almost ten years ago and graduated with a degree in education. Is she a teacher? Shucks no. She now works as a dorm supervisor on campus and still adheres to their rules.

19. All of this is consistent |
|
with what I've long observed about "Christians", and that is that they need to be told by an outside authority what to do and how to believe. There seems to be almost no internalization of their beliefs, and constantly look outside themselves for assurance. I find it quite bizarre.
As a non-believer, I look within myself to figure out the right thing to do. I feel that any belief system that expects you to treat others with dignity and respect and not to force someone else to follow you beliefs is an okay system, even I don't go along with it.

No "counterculture" clothing or hairstyles, as determined by the Dean of Women? WTF?
When I was in school, I alternated between jet black, blood red, and burgundy hair. I wouldn't have even been accepted to attend class on the first day at that school.
If a student chooses that school, then it's OK. I have a feeling, though, that parents force their kids to go there. The horror.

At the Intelligence Training Battalion, it was "follow AR 670-1 during duty hours, wear clothes off duty." They probably would have frowned on a "Marijuana Pickers Union" t-shirt or a pair of pot-leaf earrings, but no one had any.
Man, we plugged a watermelon one weekend, took it to the base swimming pool and they let us in with it! I guess the theory was that these crazy assholes couldn't have put enough vodka into that watermelon to cause any real damage anyway.
