4. What about new groups that are similar? |
|
I burned out on Velvet Underground a long time ago. And I have a bunch of the King Crimson and have Circus Maximus. Just can't listen to a lot of the music from when I was a kid anymore. s

This is completely OT. Monster Magnet has no place in a discussion of a band like Galaxie 500, who blow the pseudo-nu metal posturing of Monster Magnet out of the water.
If I were to recommend some music to Galaxie 500 fans, I'd say look at shoegaze and go from there... My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy, and the Catherine Wheel's Ferment.

8. Maybe I'm getting jaded... |
|
I'm already onto a lot of the groups mentioned. Maybe I need to look at more obscure groups. Thanks forthe suggestions so far. Sigur Ros is another favorite of mine. I enjoy the slowdive and shoegazer stuff. Keep 'em coming!

9. Damon & Naomi -- the other 2/3ds of Galaxie 500 |
|
I used to really be into Galaxie 500 about ten years ago. CLASSIC STUFF!
After you get the box set, you may want to look out for stuff by Damon and Naomi, who are the ex-Drummer and ex-Bassist from G500, respectively.
Also, there's a great band called Low (from Duluth, MN) who remind me a lot of Galaxie 500, but are more tranquil. Very cool mood music for rainy/snowy days, or just chillin'.
My band used to cover about 1/2 of G500's back catalog, back in the day. GREAT stuff.

10. Codeine are very good, too. Also Flying Saucer Attack. |
|
Don't worry, nobody really likes the Velvet Underground, because they suck, and always have. Some people just think they like the Velvet Underground.
That is all.

They're on my all-time favorites list. I've seen them once or twice at 7th Street in Minneapolis. Great band, but not much action on stage, however... ;)

Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips "Awentura" Dean is frontman for Galaxie 500 and Luna and Britta is current bassist for Luna This is a newish record great stuff. They duet on most songs. Slowish and droneyish in a good way. Has a 60's euro feel, too. Maybe because they have done Serge gainsbourg soongs together, make me think euro.
Yo La Tengo they have zillionz of albums 3 piece fro Jersey Newest one is great psychedronic
Scope out the newest Sonic Youth also Dirty and Washing Machine
Have you ever listened to Television? Classic, seminal, influential and a must for anyone's collection get Marquee Moon
Try to find To Verlaine's solo stuff. He's Television's front man. Flashlight is brilliant. Quieter and more introspective than Television. Verlaine is in rock guitar pantheon
Something a little softer? Try Belle and Sebastian's" If You're Feeling Sinister" or their new one, something something Wiatress Vocals are sort of Donovan, Nick Drake-like. Great, funny, poignant lyrics
Y'know go to the Q magazine site
If you are liking Sigur Ros, have a listen to soe of their influences. F'ristancew Pink Floyd "Obscured By Clouds" and "Meddle"
Fast forward a few years and hunt up the Cocteau Twins. Ethereal sorta Twin Peaks theme ish. they, like Sigur, have a somewhat made-up lannguage
