question about tipping/taxes for people in restaurant industry
I know that people who work in restaurants can be taxed on a percentage of restaurant sales because the IRS assumes that you are getting tipped. Does this apply to take out orders, too? That is, if someone calls in an order to a restaurant, comes in and picks it up, then leaves, does this order get added to the "restaurant sales" of that evening so that the waiters are later taxed on this too?

Thanks.

1. If a server rings it in under their number it does.
It goes on their total sales for the shift. *Some* places have a different number for those kinds of orders, but not all do.

3. Ok, thanks.
I think I've stiffed a lot of waitstaff out of money, cause I don't tip nearly as well for a take out order as for a sit down meal :(

Well at least now I know.

5. Don't feel TOO bad.
I don't think most waitresses expect any money on a take out order. I never did... and I waited tables for a LOOOOOOONG time.

7. that's even more depressing
If restaurants won't pay their staff, you'd think they'd at least split their billing so the waitstaff wouldn't be further penalized.

6. Don't feel bad - I don't tip as well for take out as for a sit down meal either.
I don't think any waitstaff member would expect you to.

2. That is a damned good question.
I didn't think of that.

But I assume wait staff is getting screwed one way or the other. Yet another reason to tip well.

8. you're right
It's just that I try to save money by not getting things delivered, but I don't want others to suffer for my cheapness.
