Long time DUer, first time vibe requestor (and a job interview read?) |
|
As they say on the radio re: "long time listener, first time caller", I want y'all to know that I don't put upon your good graces lightly.
The interview, for a teaching job at a college, is in the can. I had to do a 20 minute teaching demo in front of committee (as opposed to real class) and I think I did that really well. I decided I would do something that was both appropriate for a undergraduate class *and* teach them something, i.e. how to look at ideas they've likely taught a hundred times in a different light. Folks seemed to really dig it and say "Very nice job" and such.
And I was rolling w/ confidence and beaming good vibes for a while when the interview proper got underway. But then I gave an answer or two on some wonky stuff about remediation programs and the need for follow-up assessment (something they advertised for and that I have experience in) that may not have sat too well w/ them in terms of their prevailing philosophy.
Or not. That is, I don't know of any prevailing philosophy there, but it seemed like I felt less of a good vibe pouring from the room. Including the demo, we were in the room for nearly an hour and a half. Plus, I went at 4:00, and I'm guessing this may have been the last of several interviews that day.
They were just tired, right? Not certainly certain that I was suddenly in the "no way" column?
Any similar experiences where you wound up getting the job after you felt the energy leave the room?
Thanks in advance for general flowing vibes. I not only really need the job, I actually like the setting and the people I met.

One of things I love about DU. I don't know that youu and I have ever had a sustained discussion on a thread or anything, but here you are taking time out to make me feel good.
You know what? :yourock:

7. I wanted the kind that gives you a "happy ending" |
|
to the whole, "somebody give me a hand in finding a job that will leave me feeling a sense of self-satisfaction because that I don't need anyone else in order to feel *extremely* good (about myself)."
Do they sell those?

Plenty. I'm glad you took the time to reinforce the storyline I'm telling myself. In some ways, even if I don't get the job, I'm really "empowered" by what I did today. I know I taught them something and if I don't fit their views about where their program should head, then no job would be fine for all parties in the long run.
I don't know. It's just really nice to feel professional confidence again. (I haven't taught for about 7 years except for a part-ime gig I've had for last 2 semesters.
Anyhow, thanks again for the vibage and time-age.

Love your nick. Part of my teaching demo was built around the rhetorical aspecpt of King's "Letter From Birminham Jail" and his "Dream" speech.
So your vibes are steeerong.

20. Thanks for the good news |
|
and congrats on your job. I sent a thank you to the guy who I'd been dealing with on phone and via email, but I can't thanks the others really. Anyhow, like I said upthread, I feel good because it was beyond ok on my part, so I have confidence.
Now if I can wait until mid-May....a whole other issue.
Thanks for the vibes friend. :yourock:

Sounds like a long interview, which is always a good sign. Hard to read "energy" when it is the end of the day ... I had an interview once that in the second interview was a "group" interview (there were a number of positions, and some needed soon, other positions that opened a few months later.) I felt I had done nothing to shine (there were few "early positions" and many more for the later hiring period.) My sister had just had a baby - so I flew home after the interview to see family - and when I came back several days later (and after being too distracted to think about it) - I found I was offered the job.
On the other hand, I remember an interview just after college with a great energy level. And never even a follow up phone call ala thank you for applying/interviewing (driving several hundred miles for the interview...) Sometimes it is hard to tell.
wishing you the best.
