mmmmm Deep Fried Cow Brain Sammwiches
<snip>

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Fear of mad cow disease hasn't kept Cecelia Coan from eating her beloved deep-fried cow brain sandwiches.

She's more concerned about what the cholesterol will do to her heart than suffering the brain-wasting disease found in a cow in Washington state.

"I think I'll have hardening of the arteries before I have mad cow disease," said Cecelia Coan, 40, picking up a brain sandwich to go at the Hilltop Inn during her lunch hour. "This is better than snail, better than sushi, better than a lot of different delicacies."

The brains, battered with egg, seasoning and flour, puff up when cooked. They are served hot, heaping outside the bun.

8. well
Brain is a traditional part of almost all European cuisines. In France you'll find lamb brains on the menu of all country inns deserving the name; scrambled eggs with brain are a traditional German dish. The list goes on, it used to be very normal food. The yuck factor is recent. Not that I would touch it...

They used to have a sign listing the beer they offered and it said "ask your waitron" I always thought that was funny.

My wife and I went there one time and she tried to order all these side dishes to make her own breakfast. The waiter (er waitron) finally said, "just order the special and I will put what you want on it"

My wife thought it would be less expensive....he cut her off and asked what she wanted.

While we were eating he came down the stairs (little drop off in the back) with a pot of coffee and a plate of food....he looked around and realized he had missed the table he needed to go to...we laughed.

When we got the check he apparently had a line to type in (computer) a note or a thank you, on this line it said ***MATH CHICK****

We both laughed, he must have been having a bad day.

On the corner of Grace and Harrison near VCU.

The REALLY rude waitstaff is at Mama Zu's in Oregon Hill. OMG they are the worst. I've heard call in radio shows where people said they wanted to punch out the maitre'de but the food is really good.

10. Grandma's favorite treat
whenever they slaughtered a cow on the farm. My grandma and my father (her youngest son) used to argue over who would get to eat the brains.

And yes, scrambled with eggs. I've never tried it. Don't think I want to. But go right ahead.

19. Ack-sherly,
The Italians taught the French and (by some strange proxy) the English to cook. Before Catherine de Medici it was all organ meats and beans.

Fried and breaded. It never had any particular appeal to me but it's not disgusting to me either.

18. As a first generation American...
of Slovenian decent - I was subjected to all kinds of stuff I would not eat. "Head Cheese" was at the top of the list. A type of deli "meat" made from pig snouts, lips, brain stems, eyeballs, cheeks, ears, thyroids, uvulas, etc - all held together into a loaf with a clear gelatinous substance (phlegm & mucous?)
