What appliances do you leave on when you leave?
The dishwasher?
The washing machine?
The drier?

My wife has a thing about electrical devices. I turn off the drier but I'll let the other ones run as I leave. I guess it is a water thing.

1. None
My brother almost burned to death as a teenager when my mom left the dryer running as he was taking a nap. It caught fire and he only got out because my mother returned home. I am a bit pyrophobic. I even unplug my Bunn coffee maker when I'm leaving for more than a day.

I'm that way too, my house burned when I was little and we lost all our stuff. That'll really mess you up.
I'm so forgetful that I've made a list of everything to check before I leave the house. Except my computer, which I worry about, it's got a fan but anything can happen, I hope it's okay. I should probably turn it off too. What do y'all think about computers left on?

16. Sometimes I'll run out with the main one on, but not the lap top...
I don't know why I insist on the laptop being off. But the whole time I'm out, I worry about the main one catching. I really take it a bit too far. I worry about cloth (i.e. curtains, paper baskets) that are too close to outlets and what have you.

When MrG and I were first married, we lived in a mobile home. I worked nights. WannaBe was sleeping and MrG had just dozed off. I came home about an hour early, luckily, just as the heat tape caught the insulation (you know that "flame proof" stuff?) on fire. I shudder to think.

19. Why leave it on?
The only thing I could see leaving on is a digital clock and the fridge.

3. Just the washing machine.
I figure it's too wet to catch on fire...

The drier, no way!

4. The refrigerator.
I don't run the others when I'm not home. A dishwasher or washing machine if it malfunctions can cause more damage the longer it's left unattended because of the water. With the dryer, it's the difference between a small fire and one that burns down the house.

8. Mostly just the kerosene lamps and space heaters, the gas dryer, and curling irons
I hate waiting for a curling iron to heat up, so I leave 'em plugged in and on all the time.

Same with the Chipper Shredder that sits perpetually in the front yard across from the elementary school.

12. I don't eat toast in the tub, silly. Don't be stupid. I eat fried shrimp and donuts and crabcakes!
That's what the tubside fryer is for, and that fucker never gets turned off! I use the blowdryer to blow the extra grease off the foodstuffs. And of course, my old 480 Volt/Three-phase tube radio with exposed tubes sits lovingly within reach.

Toast in the bathtub. :eyes: What, do you think I'm crazy?

Jeez.

15. I leave on the TV and a couple of lamps
to make the house look occupied. Other than that I make sure all other appliances are turned off.

I would never leave the dryer running. It's a fire hazard. (Dust and lint can catch fire.) Washing machine is OK.

25. I used to leave CNN or a radio on all the time...
...even if I was gone for a few days, so my elder cats would have some voices to hear. Plus I feel that radio or TV noise deters burglars.
