My grandmother passed away tonight. |

Edited on Thu May-03-07 07:54 PM by Akoto
Some of you might recall me posting about my grandmother a few days ago. We thought she was just really sick at the time, but it turns out that the doctor had been telling her she had the flu, when she didn't. Her condition was far more serious.
Tonight, we made the choice to take her off of life support. She just wasn't getting any better after 20 hours of surgery, and terrible things would've been required to keep her alive. There was a chance for survival, but not in a way she'd have wanted. She had papers stating she did not want extraordinary measures, and so we chose to say 'enough' and respect her wishes.
I am just so sad. I had two grandmothers, yes, but I was always 'her' grandson. She didn't take any crap, but she was a good Democrat and very much a southern lady. I find myself having flashes of so many memories of my childhood with her. Sun tea on the porch, swimming in her pool, her 'gourmet cooking' as she called it (hot dogs and baked beans).
It was just all so unexpected. It was so hard for us to make the final decision, but we just couldn't let her suffer any more, and she'd have never forgiven us for the drastic measures necessary to help her survive.
I certainly won't ever forgive her doctor for not running tests on her the very moment she'd said she was throwing up black stuff.

1. Oh, Akoto, I'm so sorry. |
|
I wish things had turned out better, but take comfort in the fact that you honored her wishes.
You should report the doctor to the state medical board. He's dangerous if he isn't taking patients' complaints seriously.
My condolences to you and your family. I hope your good memories sustain you through this difficult period.

She will always be very special to you.
When you love someone like that, they will always be nearby and listening as your heart speaks to them.
Excerpt from Song of Myself
I bequeath myself to the dirt and grow from the grass I love. If you want me again look for me under your boot soles.
You will hardly know who I am or what I mean. But I shall be good health to you nevertheless. And filtre and fiber your blood.
Failing to fetch me at first keep encouraged. Missing me one place search another I stop some where waiting for you.
