Uncle Zomby's Safety Tip O' the Week
Install smoke detectors, or if you have them, have the batteries replaced every year.

We bought three different smoke detectors - one for the kitchen (which is supposed to not be too sensitive to the toaster or stove-top items), the hallway (it has a special floodlight to accompany the alarm), and the bedroom.

Next week's safety tip: Fire extinguishers. :patriot:

5. We have them
Unfortunately the one in my bedroom kept going off one morning for no reason the other day -which was very annoying. Checked the batteries and everything else but it remained a mystery. Thankfully it was fixed and is working fine now.

I agree though -get them installed. We have them throughout the house as well

7. I discovered something odd
My smoke alarm started the beep-beep that says it's time to change the battery. Only I didn't. And it kept doing it for a whole freaking year. Then my BiL bought some batteries. But a whole year. I thought the battery was supposed to be dead! (I know, I know it needs to be able to go beeeeeeeeeeeeep for half an hour during a fire just to make sure you wake up. I guess I have this foolishly optimistic idea that the dogs would wake me up if there was a fire.) Also, when did nine volt batteries get so expensive?

8. The batteries should be replaced when you reset the clocks ...
twice a year, whether they need to be replaced or not. I thank you.

9. Battery manufacturers started that idea
Wanted to boost sales. Worked like a charm too, because it's tied into something safety related, rather than toys or radios.

Fact is, once a year is more than enough, and I usually just change 'em with the spring time change.
