This Frank Zappa quote will chill you... |
|
"The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way, and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theatre."

5. Zappa always claimed (attn RKZ confirm or deny) |
|
Edited on Thu Jan-15-04 03:48 PM by 56kid
that he never did that stuff. RandomKoolZip needs to check in to confirm or deny this.
(whoops, this is response to response 1)

Zappa did not do drugs. Even if he hadn't said it, think about the kind of guy he was: a hard-working perfectionist as far as his music was concerned; in total control -- not the kind of person to want his mind messed up by drugs.

8. As sharp as Mark Twain |
|
FZ's political thought is very much like Twain's. Twain also spoke of our civilization as a product to be sold--one version for the peoples we subjugated, and one for domestic consumption.

9. Zappa was contemptuous of drug users |
|
and merciless on any musician who came to a recording session or concert high. He fired dozens for that.
Unka Frank didn't need Purple Haze for insight. He used his brain.

12. Zappa always seemed amused but not part of the hippie thing |
|
long before my time, but it's true he claimed to not do drugs at all, and was constantly poking fun at the hippie/stoner/ free love culture of the time.
About his perfectionism as a reason to not do drugs, you're probably right.

15. BNope, no drugs for Frank |
|
In his book "The Real Frank Zappa" he mentions trying pot a couple times, but hated it because it dried his throat out.
Cigarettes, coffee, and genius were his motivators.

19. I should confess now... |
|
I stole that line. Cassandra Peterson ("Elvira") said it in her movie, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.
It was one of only two funny lines in that movie, in my humble opinion. The other was when her show was opening that night, and she raised her glass in a toast and said:
"Here's to my big opening! Well, what I mean is ... oh, never mind."

But it's been 10 years since Zappa died, so my memory could be faulty.

That's one that I'm not familiar with. It also sounds kinda like "The Matrix."

17. If memory serves, he said it at least in his "real Frank Zappa" book |
|
Though he might have said it earlier elsewhere, I'm pretty sure that's where I remember reading it. Alas, I don't have my copy available to me right now. reminds me it really is time to pull it out and read it again.
