Sixth-Grader Stabs, Mutilates Ducks With Pencil Behind School - Children Traumatized

The grassy creek bed behind Wilbur Middle School is a living laboratory, a place where kids learn about nature by studying native grasses, wildflowers, tadpoles and birds.

But this week's lesson was cruel and disturbing:

A mother duck and two ducklings found dead. A sixth-grader accused of stabbing them with a pencil and mutilating their bodies.

"It's shocking and upsetting," said Terry Glover, whose daughter, Kelci, is a seventh-grader at Wilbur.

"I think the kids are shaken, just not quite understanding how someone -- anyone -- could do that."

The sixth-grader was suspended Wednesday after admitting to killing the ducks. A hearing will decide whether or when he returns to school, district spokeswoman Susan Arensman said.

School officials were responding "the way we do whenever we believe that a child might be a risk to himself or others," said Liz McGinness, who coordinates the district's mental health crisis team.

"We really don't mince words on this," she said. "We know that animal cruelty is a very serious, significant behavior. We will be following up with the parents to be very clear that they seek outside mental health care for this child."

Youngsters who hurt/kill animals grow up to be adults who hurt/kill people. They need to get this kid help NOW.
