Bruce Cockburn,

great anti war song, and this video is kinda good to go with the song

:hi:

ON EDIT:

FUCK OUR WAR pRESIDENT!

:grr:

second edit:

If I Had a Rocket Launcher (4:59)

here comes the helicopter -- second time today
everybody scatters and hopes it goes away
how many kids they've murdered only god can say
if i had a rocket launcher...i'd make somebody pay.

i don't believe in guarded borders and i don't believe in hate
i don't believe in generals or their stinking torture states
and when i talk with the survivors of things too sickening to relate
if i had a rocket launcher...i would retaliate

on the rio lacantun one hundred thousand wait
to fall down from starvation -- or some less humane fate.
cry for guatemala, with a corpse in every gate
if i had a rocket launcher...i would not hesitate

i want to raise every voice -- at least i've got to try.
every time i think about it water rises to my eyes.
situation desperate echoes of the victims cry
if i had a rocket launcher...some sonofabitch would die

5. Powerful song
We all need to collectively wake up and seriously listen to the victim's cries.

One of the victim's being our own maggiegault's brother.

Commander guy and his fucking illegal war. How many more have to die?

11. I'm waiting for the college kids to kick into high gear
Most are not, because why should they? They have no skin in this game like the kids did back in the late 6o's and early 70's. Not that I want a draft, hell I never wanted a war.

We are, unfortunately, so detached from this war because the commander guy never asked for sacrifice. Instead the rich were rewarded with a big, fat tax break, and the rest of us were told to take a vacation and go shopping. Then they pulled the cloak and dagger move on the caskets coming home, so Joe Public would never have to see the ugliness. Out of sight -- out of mind.

I wonder when the next big protest day is. I know that I have to personally step up. This next one I will make an effort to participate in.

I love this song! And "Send Lawyers, Guns, and Money" by Warren Zevon. Both hits from my younger, Socialist days!

15. Cockburn on 'Rocket Launcher':
19 October 1984

"Aside from airing my own experience, which is where the songs always start, if we're ever going to find a solution for this ongoing passion for wasting each other, we have to start with the rage that knows no impediments, an uncivilized rage that says it's okay to go out and shoot some one."

"I can't imagine writing it under any other conditions."

According to Cockburn, "the idea was to reach a different audience than the politicians by having us go and observe, using the relative visibility that we have to educate the Canadian public to what we had seen and to raise money for projects that OXFAM has in the region."

"One is directly responsible for the other," he says, though he insists neither commitment defines his work. "I don't consciously or not consciously write certain kinds of songs," Cockburn says. "In fact, I almost didn't put 'Rocket Launcher' on the album because of the ease with which it could be misinterpreted."
-- from "The Long March of Bruce Cockburn: From Folkie to Rocker, Singing About Injustice" by Richard Harrington, Washington Post, 19 October 1984. Submitted by Nigel Parry.

16. It doesn't seem easy to misinterpret to me

it's a great anti war song, it addresses the irony of the anger over the killing that needs to be channeled into bringing the fighting to an end
