Berkeley Breathed at MSNBC
Edited on Sun May-06-07 11:37 PM by Archae
Q: Despite winning a Pulitzer, you've said you don't want
to be on the editorial pages because no one reads them.
But what is the future for the comic pages?

A: Google "newspapers' future".

Q: If you showed up this afternoon at the offices of a national
newspaper syndicate with a new comic strip called "Bloom County",
would they buy it?

A: Thbbft! That's the sound Bill the Cat makes, if you recall.
It's not a sound of transcendent approval. Remember, I started
when there was no Web. No Jon Stewart. No Colbert. No viral videos.
No "Onion." No vomitous avalanche of sarcastic, cynical snark
that so infuses today's pop landscape. I had it by myself with
Johnny Carson's monologue. A lovely, sweet time in America.

Q: Say it isn't so, Berkeley: contrary to the rumors,
you aren't really going to kill off Opus when you decide
to end the current "Opus" comic strip ... are you?

A: Oh right. And get a call from my mother?

1. I always hate it when talented originals from the recent "past" admit that
their talent and orginality would simply not be accepted by the mainstream today, let alone marketable. I've heard Dustin Hoffman, Chris Carter and Stephen Spielberg say that.

6. Because it's depressing to be reminded how little creativity we have left
in the age of media consolidation, right-wing corruption of the entertainment apparatus, and a population with no attention span (or taste).

2. I loved this Q&A combination:
Q: Can you give me your take on the news of the day? What current headline amuses or bemuses you the most?
A: "Rove on Hunger Strike at San Quentin: Says Toilet's Clogged." One can dream.

3. He still hasn't responded to my e-mail about a 20th anniversary "Billy & The Boingers" CD release.

4. Saturday he did a book signing at the Borders where I work.
Came in that afternoon, and was signing copies of his new book, Mars Needs Moms, as well as copies of his other books. If I weren't stuck behind the registers, I would've bought an Opus book to get signed. Love that comic. :)
