...I worked temporarily for a company whose office was right on the corner of 1st and Cherry in Seattle. Right across the stree was a fantastic coffee house that blew just about all others out of the water. I have no idea why their coffee was so much better, but it was.

I don't mind the heat too much (remind me I said that in August)- I just would prefer a little variety; maybe be within driving distance to some good skiing terrain. As long as I can have Community Coffee shipped to me, all should be OK with the world!

59. Don't count on it....
This kind of work is largely the same thing day in and day out. I'm in a supervisory role now, so I spend most of my day dealing with procurement and maintenance issues. But don't get me wrong- I do like my job. I did the retail thing for about a year and the holiday season nearly sent me to the nut house. I could have a whole day of nice customers, then that last one with the attitude comes in and that's what I would remember...

12. Random Order on Alberta St., NE Portland
From the Mercury:

Random Order
1800 NE Alberta, 331-1420

This little coffee shop is the perfect morning spot to sit down with the ol' laptop and get to work. Beautiful windows spray sunlight across an orderly array of tables and eclectic local artwork, and the place is generally very peaceful and quiet, even when full. As for the coffee, it's topnotch (Stumptown), and it's supplemented by a worthy menu that includes the World Famous Fried Egg Sandwich, various panini-centric items, and a blueberry muffin that will turn your mouth to quivering mush. Seriously. These huge muffins are baked in-house, are absolutely crammed with blueberries, and are as good as anything you'll find anywhere, be it food, money, sex, or drugs. JWS

35. my kitchen-- seriously....
I roast fresh every two or three days, I don't use no stinkin' drip brewer-- 100% french press, babeeee!-- and I buy awesome small lot beans. AND I pay attention to their roast characteristics because one roast definitely does not fit all beans.

We have some pretty decent coffee shops here in town, and most do their own artisanal small batch roasting, but none holds a candle to the coffee I make in my own kitchen.

Macy is the name of the founder... it has NOTHING to do with the upscale department store. :-)

Macy's makes the meanest French press anywhere. They hand you a nice mug and the carafe/plunger so you can refill on your own. They have the roaster right there in the seating area. It's a nice place to read on a quiet afternoon. :donut:

The exact place does not matter; the place exists only in my memories now.

That was the hangout of my youth, where a teen could linger for hours having a strong cup of coffee and sweet pastries, as friends drifted in and out around a table that was always full but never with the same people...

A place where the young could talk about world events, politics, literature, history,...

...and believe that someday, it would be our turn to change the world for the better.
