11. Marriage is about money

I get flamed every time I say this but it's true - the historical and social basis of marriage has to do with property ownership and the legitimacy of offspring.

People may decide to get married because they love one another but you can love one another without being married. What marriage actually does is seal a contract between you and your spouse that says your spouse inherits your property and any children you have are assumed to be your legitimate offspring. While those may be desirable things because you love your spouse, the object of marriage is not directed at love but at property.

I always find it rather refreshing when people seem to recognize that, like the couple in question. :)
