Man forces evacuation of apartment complex in attempt to make biodiesel.

PORTLAND, Ore. - The man responsible for sending 10 people to the hospital and forcing 21 of his neighbors out of their apartments apologized Sunday, saying he was trying to create an alternative fuel to help the environment.

Firefighters responded to the Ladd's Addition Apartments at Southeast 12th and Harrison Saturday night after self-described inventor Thom Gambaro's experiment went awry.

Gambaro, pictured above, said he had prepared about a year for the experiment, which he conducted in a garage he rents with his apartment. He said he was combining chemicals, including mercury and aluminum, in the hopes of generating a reaction that would produce hydrogen. He hopes to harness that hydrogen for power.

But on Saturday night, that didn't happen. Instead he started a small fire.

"I'm just sitting there going, 'Oh no. What have I done now," said Gambaro, who has been teaching himself chemistry.
