Totally cool! Killer Whales squeeze the meat part of penguins out of their skin to eat them
and they leave the feathers and the skin, still intact, behind.

I'm watching a Discovery show on Killer Whales.

Fucking cool! They showed a remnant of a penguin that had been squeezed out.

Also cool is that the parents teach the young whales how to do this.

I like when they throw seals with their tails like a catapult and then belly flop on them.

6. This is not "deriving pleasure form killing."
These are efficient methods of procuring food. Period.

Would you like to eat a chicken that still has it's feathers on?

Would you want to try to eat something that could bite back?

20. actually the post makes no sense, since killer whales are going by their instinct
to kill efficiently, so that they can survive.

its not like they are killing the penguins and putting the feather up as decoration in their apartments.

26. What are you in awe of? That someone believes a whale derives pleasure from killing?
Maybe the pleasure of feeding itself, but hardly pleasure at the act itself. The whale is smart enough to have figured a way around the feathers and other non-digestible parts.

I'm in awe that I even post in a forum where anyone would think that the way in which a whale cleans its food is somehow a perverted, pleasurable experience. Wow.

How is being fascinated by the way a whale hunts "deriving pleasure from killing?" Animal instincts are amazing, interesting things. Should we mourn every time a whale eats a penguin?

62. Wooshed? Either way you take MRs post is just ludicrous.
We as humans are (and rightly so) fascinated by the way animals live and eat and survive. So, whether he was referring to the whale deriving pleasure from the method it used in eating a seal, or a person derives pleasure in imagining it, both are just silly. The whale is surviving in the best way it can, and we are simply fascinated by its ingenuity. To say that there is some sort of odd pleasure involved is ludicrous.

21. So you think that whales do this out of pleasure?
Kind of a whalish "HA HA!" to the penguins?

Or are you implying that *I* am deriving some kind of pleasure out of the killing? I derive no pleasure from the killing; I derive pleasure from the scientific knowledge, and from being witness to part of the cycle of life and death. Whales are meat eaters, thus they must kill. Their methods of killing are quite amazing, and natural. The penguins also kill to eat, since they eat fish, and they do it by swallowing fish whole and letting them die slowly in their gizzard or whatever the hell they have.

If your intent was to insult me, you've done a piss poor job of it.

would you need evidence for that claim?

Watch nearly any documentary on orca whales and they'll often show footage of orcas killing seals and playing with the bodies as if they were toys, and not eating everything that they kill.

Here's one particularly dramatic example of orcas killing sperm whales:

69. i'm not saying *you* are getting pleasure out of it
I'm saying that highly evolved animals, like whales, dolphins, chimpanzees, ect, seem to "enjoy" hunting and killing, moreso than say, a shark or a lion or something does. They don't "play" with the animals they're going to kill.

I didn't mean to offend you, I was just stating something I seem to notice when I watch nature shows and things like that. The closer animals get to humans, the more they seem to enjoy killing.

Do I *KNOW* they're enjoying it? no. But I'm just stating what I see and what I'm interpreting.

One thing, along these lines, that always gets me is the number of people who simply don't understand a predator-prey relationship, and think of predators as villains of some sort. As if all animals are supposed to form some sort of peace treaty and live together and dance in the woods. I blame Walt Disney.

When I was in 6th grade. And there was a bit showing a wolf pack bringing down a caribou calf. And half the class was all wide eyed and saying, "Oh, the poor little caribou!"

Well, hell, how about the poor little wolf cubs waiting at home? It's not an easy life being a predator and there's no guarantee they're going to eat on a given day. That's just the way it works.

They can't go to the grocery store and get a wrapped package of meat that they don't have to think about where it came from.

This is nature, red in tooth and claw. We may think of baby animals as cute, but to a predator, it's lunch. It's all about surviving.
Personally, I think the thing about how killer whales eat penguins is kinda gross, but also really clever. Smart critters.
