have you used a service called billmelater -- 90 days no interest? |
|
While I was browsing various reputable retailer web sites -- G.I.Joes, a furniture site, etc. -- I kept running across a payment method offered called "billmelater" so I checked out the billmelater.com site.
Billmelater provides for purchases on credit at many different stores with the credit granted at the time of purchase just by providing name, address, and the last four SS digits. They run an instant credit check of some kind and you are either approved for that purchase or not.
You can pay for the purchase within 90 days with no interest. If you pay after 90 days, it's 19 percent annual, with no other fees.
So it appears to be a de facto non-card credit card. You get a monthly bill.
Perhaps they are trying to suck back in those people who have cancelled their credit cards. Still, in a real pinch it might be useful. I don't keep any credit cards anymore, but there's one purchase that would be awfully practical right now.
So.....have you encountered this service?

1. I have - we've used it twice |

When we bought our Macs. We always wait until the period is up and then pay in full. It's worked out well. You just need to make sure you remember when the payoff date is, as you will not be reminded!

2. I felt a lot better about it after I read... |

...articles in Forbes, and a couple of financial mags. It apparently is legit, with a few of the same customer service glitches that standard credit cards get.
