Wish me luck today--taking the GED. |
|
Edited on Sat May-12-07 05:48 AM by oktoberain
I'm going to take the GED today, 10 years after dropping out of high school. I left school because my Mom had a heart attack, and there wasn't anyone else to work and take care of her and my younger siblings. I was an honors, AP student in the gifted program, so it was very painful for me to give it up and enter the rat race so young. I took care of Mom for almost 3 years, until she was healed enough to work again. Then I wound up getting pregnant, and I've been devoting most of my time to raising the kidlet ever since then. But today, I'm going to go into that testing room and dazzle them all.
I've been taking the "Official Practice Test" in different versions for weeks--I've scored perfect scores on every part with the exception of math, and I've only missed one or two on the math part. There's a good chance I can be our state's GED valedictorian for the year, thus winning several scholarships that will come in VERY handy for college. The adult basic educators who've been working with me have given me SO much confidence with their admiration and positive feedback. One of them uses a practice essay I wrote as an example for the other adult students of what a perfect essay should be.
I'll be leaving in about 20 minutes. I'm not really nervous--just feeling stoked and determined and READY for this.

4. After 24 you don't have to put parents info on the FAFSA. |
|
I got a full ride from FA. I just had to work at a shitty job for a few years.

A former student received a full ride at a good University based on a near perfect score on the exam. Sounds like you are on the same trajectory. Good luck - and keep us updated!

Taking the GED is hard and scary on so many levels. My mother got her GED the same year I graduated from high school. I was--and still am--very proud of her.
I'll be sending you "good luck" vibes all day :bounce: :bounce:

Particularly if you went to high school and were an AP student.
I'm sure you did great. :hi:

I left school due to medical problems, and would really like to get my GED now. Been studying for quite a while. I have trouble with the math, too, but I'm determined to push through my health issues for long enough to go and take that test.

I'm all finished, and although we won't have our score results back for a few weeks, I am absolutely 100% certain that I not only passed it, but damn near ACED it. I'll be so bold as to predict perfect scores in the English-Reading, English-Writing, Writing-Essay, Science, and Social Studies sections. I don't think I got a perfect score in Math, but I'm pretty sure I scored in the top 90th percentile, because I don't think I missed more than two.
It was a long, exhausting day. I had to take small breaks between each section, because my hand was cramping. I'm not used to writing by hand, so the endless "bubbling in" and the two pages worth of carefully handwritten essay really had my right hand aching. But I'm home now, and in everything but the most official sense, I'm now a high school grad!
Thank you all so much for the love and support. :grouphug: :loveya:   :toast: :bounce: :woohoo:

20. Well, the college I'm going to will accept either SATs or the ACT, so |
|
I'm going to save myself a headache and just take the ACT.
I'm currently in a state of half-joy, half-grief. I finally managed to get a diploma so I can go to college...but I didn't get my %^#$@!* FAFSA application submitted until March 31st. Our state's deadline is March 1st. It was a stupid mistake caused by me misreading a date somewhere, but unless there's some way to get an exception or a waiver (highly doubtful) then I can't start college until Fall of '08. That is TRULY heartbreaking. *sigh*
I'm wavering between majoring in Political Science, English, or Women's Studies--but I have plenty of time to make that decision, I guess.
