We're pretty lucky to be home right now and not in the hospital. |
|
We were just traveling Southbound on a small residential two lane road (Western just South Nichols Hills for those of you who know the area). A little old woman, who could barely see over the steering wheel, failed to completely stop at a stop sign. A City of Oklahoma City truck broadsided her on the driver's side and knocked her across the road, doing everything they possibly could to stop their truck. He came to rest probably 6 inches from where I had stopped when I saw he had hit her. Luckily, I was traveling slowly, and stopped quickly. There had been a man weed eating in the spot the woman's car ended up near a tree on the NW corner of the intersection. He said he heard the crash, dropped the weed-whacker and took off running. He's probably lucky he has good hearing and good reflexes. We've decided 7 inches is apparently a lucky distance. I'm still shaking and a little freaked out. The woman is at the hospital right now with what is probably a concussion and some broken bones. The only reason she's alive is she had on her seatbelt and had a side curtain airbag. Thank God for the driver of the Truck actually caring about not hurting anyone. The two guys in the truck felt terrible, but couldn't do anything. We're just worried she and her family are going to try to sue the city because of it. Those guys should not lose their jobs because some old lady who shouldn't be driving had a car. Well, that was my Saturday afternoon. How are you guys? Duckie

Glad you're okay.
And I hope she gets the sense to stop driving before she hurts someone. That happened to me once, and the one who hit me had no insurance and an out-of-date license.
I'm off for a jog. It's 70 degrees out and my PDA/MP3 player just finished charging.

5. This is why I am determined to be rich enough |
|
to hire a driver for myself when I turn either 60 or 65; depending on my eyesight and reflexes as noted by my doctor. I think there should be some kind of mandatory evaluation of older drivers. I don't think their independence should be taken away just because they are old; but an evaluation should be done. I don't want to lose my ability to go where I want when I want either; but things like this are a good example of the danger to other drivers.
So glad you are ok and no one was killed or permanently maimed.
Go kiss whomever you love and breathe the air...

I was telling Skip that I want a driver when we're rich while we were at the mall, but only so that during the summer I wouldn't have to sweat. Duckie

It was bad. Crazy thing was, we passed one wreck three blocks up North. Some chick got rear-ended by this dude, and the dude was a complete idiot. Almost hit US twice trying to make his truck go up on this curb. He'd get up onto it, then pull back off. No idea what was going through his head. I guess he was trying to see how many days he could ruin. We were still talking about that one when the second one happened. Duckie

 :pals: A little old lady broadsided me in 1991, and it was terrible. Luckily nobody was severely injured, but she ran a stop sign too. She shouldn't have been driving either. I know what it's like to live through that. :scared:

12. I'm sure there's no chance of that. |

Unfortunately, the way things work, she probably won't even get a ticket, even though had it been a young man instead of an old woman, he probably would have been tossed in jail or something. Duckie

I get so mad when I hear stories like this. Why do the elderly refuse to admit they could be dangerous behind the wheel of a car? I remember a story dateline did about elderly drivers. This one man had several tickets and accidents and still refused to stop driving. One of the reporters rode with him to see how his driving was. The man was yelling "See! I'm in complete control of the vehicle!" As he's driving the wrong way on a one way street. :eyes:
