Artifact

For three years you lived in your house
just as it was before she died: your wedding
portrait on the mantel, her clothes hanging
in the closet, her hair still in the brush.
You have told me you gave it all away
then, sold the house, keeping only the confirmation
cross she wore, her name in cursive chased
on the gold underside, your ring in the same

box, those photographs you still avoid,
and the quilt you spread on your borrowed bed—
small things. Months after we met, you told me she had
made it, after we had slept already beneath its loft
and thinning, raveled pattern, as though beneath
her shadow, moving with us, that dark, that soft.

She won the Pulitzer last year for it.

I see it as moving on but realizing that our pasts are a part of us. How do you interpret it?

Her book is broken up into 3 sections of poems:

Divorce, breaking up the house, and Late Wife.

kinda walks thru the split up and into the new relationship.

Seems appropos for me :D

8. yeah, I was discussing poetry and depression

last night with (DU'er who will remain nameless) on the phone. Seems my muse feeds on my mood. I've been writing more lately as things have gotten more, shall we say difficult...

and last night I was asked by one of the local book stores to do a poetry reading. Haven't done that in many years...
