5. Yeah, it was gorgeous. As usual, though, there are always people
who are perfectly happy despoiling an unspoiled wilderness. Although the ship permitted smoking on board, passengers were asked not to throw cigarette butts overboard, to protect the environment.

Sure enough, my wife and I saw smokers standing at the rail, pitching their cigarette butts over the side. I wanted to grab them and throw them over as well, but then I'd be looked at as anti-social or something.

Oh well.

31. I find it terribly ironic
that they are worried about the environment. :eyes:

11. The odds of being on *that* ship are pretty small
248-passenger paddleboat, vs the typical 2000-passenger Alaska cruise ship. The big ones don't run aground.

20. I just saw the news item. My wife and I saw that ship when it was docked in Skagway.
This was just last Thursday. We were on the Sun Princess docked at the Skagway pier, and the Norwegian Sun was just across the way. In-between there was this little, tiny paddlewheeler tied up at the dock.

Weird that we should see it again so soon, in a news report no less.

2. I've thought about taking an Alaskan cruise
Edited on Mon May-14-07 11:02 AM by Scooter24
but it just doesn't excite me as much as the Caribbean or Mediterranean does. I do want to take a Panama Canal cruise, maybe in 2010. I have 5 planned through 2009, the first being a 7-day Western Caribbean this September, the last being the inaugural of RCCL's 220,000 ship due out in the fall 2009.

Hope you had a great time! :hi:

7. Yeah, overall it was terrific.
I added a new state and state capital to my count. I've got about six or seven states to go to complete the set. B-)

16. 2 Answers:
1. Yes, it was pretty cold. It was about 40F in Skagway, our most northerly port of call. But on sailing days, out on deck with the wind-chill, it could get to 30F or so. :scared:

2. Pics are coming; I use old-fashioned film cameras, so I have to get them developed. I know, I know, how 20th Century...

22. Thanks
Sorry it was so chilly.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with a good old-fashioned camera. If I wasn't so impatient, I'd still use my 35mm.

13. My parents made the mistake of taking an Alaska cruise
first, before they went to the Caribbean or the Bahamas.

Alaska ruined them -- the other cruises just didn't hold up, and they stopped going. I've never heard of anyone who didn't enjoy an Alaska cruise.

Did you buy any native crafts?

18. Did you take the inside passage?
How far north did you go?

Was it unseasonably warm?

Were you among the younger people on the ship?

What activities did you do on land?

Did you gain 10 pounds on the voyage?

Did you find yourself staying up really late every night because the sun just wouldn't go down?

25. Yeah, Ketchikan was really cool. In more ways than one.
I liked the way they preserved the frontier feeling of the structures built along the pilings on Creek Street.

They had a local dressed as a "working girl" of the period taking pictures with the tourists.

I'm glad you had a great time.
I bet the sun was up most of the time.

That's one of my goals in life-
to see the Inside Passage in late
Spring/ early Summer.
