I have discovered the Stupidest Organized Sport in History
So I'm sittin' here flipping through the Raleigh News and Observer when I observe the news that Jamie Langridge of Odessa, Texas, is the USA Champion of Rock Scissors Paper.

http://www.newsobserver.com/102/story/574001.html

Rock Scissors Paper. No shit.

This of course piqued my curiosity and I meandered into the World RPS Society's website at http://www.worldrps.com.

They have tournaments, and a world championship and everything. They even have a FAQ on their site, and (as proof they're actually serious about this) one of the questions answered is not "are you fucking shitting me?"

But no. For all you kids who think NASCAR isn't a sport, who think bowling isn't a sport, who think curling's not a sport...I present to you Rock Paper Scissors. The sport that legitimizes all other sports--because if Rock Paper Scissors can be an authentic Organized Sport With Tournaments and Everything, ANYTHING can be a sport.

2. Well, then, I nominate childbearing as a sport
It's physically demanding, after all and not everyone can do it. Actually, if men did it, it would probably already be considered a sport. :P

8. We use to play Rock, Paper, Scissors on the school bus - it was dangerous
because if you lost you got your hand smacked really really hard.

We'd all go home with these really red hands from oversmacked - everyone would complete to see who could hit the hardest (rings were not allowed).

10. Oh please. We taught you mainlanders everything you know
about the sport* known locally as jan ken po. We jan ken po for everything: the last pastry, what have you. There was even a TV game show of the same name, in which the winner went up against a hostess in you-know-what for the grand prize.

15. No, I think extreme walking takes the cake
Rock/paper/scissors as a sport is pretty bad, but there was this kid (no link - it was on TV and I forgot where I saw it) that was trying to petition the Olympics to add the sport of Extreme Walking, a 'sport' he made up, which involved him walking and occasionally jumping on things. Seriously. He'd walk along and then jump on a bench, or the side of a lamppost, or a trash can, then keep walking.

Seriously.

18. ESPN to televise this year's USA RPS League championship
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117961028.html?categoryid=14&cs=1

I have to admit that it beats the heck out of the eating competitions they already air.

22. They were set to cover it last year
but something fell through.

I think it sounds kinda fun and like I said, better than watching some eating competition.

There was an impromptu RPS tournament at the WSOP last year and they aired part of it.

Sure it's a mindless children's game but you at least have the opportunity to stay one step ahead of your opponent. Unless your opponent is playing in a truly random fashion which as a strategery has the advantage of being a non-losing one. Unfortunately it isn't a winning strategy either.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock,_Paper,_Scissors#Mathematics

As for a truly mindless game. don't get me started on Deal or No Deal.
