Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip has been cancelled. |
|
For those who haven't heard yet: Aaron Sorkin's latest series, Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, has been cancelled by NBC. Apparently they didn't even want to wait to air the last 6 episodes, which start a week from Thursday at 10 PM.
Damn, and damn again. For all the complaining the critics did about it, I loved that show. It was smart, funny, dramatic, and it had some of the best writing I've seen since The West Wing ended. Not to mention the cast, which was simply phenomenal: D.L. Hughley and Nate Corddry, in particular, really wowed me as a great comic duo.
So we lose it, and we get another season of Survivor. Ironic, then, that the first episode of Studio 60 started off with the despondent head honco of the show-within-a-show (played to the hilt by Judd Hirsch) hijacking the live broadcast and making a career-ending speech about how television was being dumbed down to appeal to the lowest forms of human interest.

1. It wasn't my favorite but they never give a lot of them a chance |
|
There have been a bunch in the last couple of years that have been cut after I've just gotten attached to them (like The Nine). It makes you not want to give any show a chance because they'll just cancel it as soon as you're into it.

3. Gilmore Girls is gone too.. as is The Sopranos.. and Deadwood |
|
"Six Degrees" was a good one I liked too..and "The Nine" was another one they never gave a chance to.
The hour-long show and the traditional sit-com are on their way out :(
Of course there's always rooms for another schlocky "reality" show and a resurgence of game shows is not a good sign.
Bingo is coming:eyes:
and we all know how entertaining:eyes: Dancing with the Stars and Idol and all the other crap is.
The reason, I read.. was that these types of shows are cheaper to produce.. no "primadonna actors" asking for raises , no stable of persnickety writers.. in other words.. a MINIMUM of union people, and an endless supply of eager-to-please off-the-street people.
There are fewer and fewer entertaining diversions on tv these days.. More sleep for me :)

4. Well, that's pretty much the end of watching commercial TV for me. |
|
Except maybe for Bill Moyers and the Simpsons.
I love Studio 60, but much like the way NBC treated West Wing at the last, they didn't give it much support at all. It was almost like they expected it to take off on and do well without any network backing at all.
I wish a cable channel would pick it up--I think it might do well there.

My dream is for Aaron Sorkin to write a show for HBO or Showtime. He's too brilliant for the constraints of network TV.
