2. I didn't see the earlier thread, but "Diamonds on My Windshield", Tom Waits.
From the "Looking for the Heart of Saturday Night" album.

Diamonds on my windshield
Tears from heaven
Pulling into town on the interstate
Pulling a steel train in the rain
The wind bites my cheek through the wing
Fast flying, freeway driving
Always makes me sing

There's a Duster tryin to change my tune
Pulling up fast on the right
Rolling restlessly, twenty-four hour moon

Wisconsin hiker with a cue-ball head
Wishing he was home in a Wiscosin bed
Fifteen feet of snow in the east
Colder then a welldigger's ass

Oceanside it ends the ride, San Clemente coming up
Sunday desperadoes slip by, gas station closed,
Cruise with a dry back
Orange drive-in the neon billin'
Theatres fillin' to the brim
Slave girls and a hot spurn bucket full of sin

Metropolitan area with interchange and connections
Fly-by-nights from Riverside
Black and white plates, out of state,
Running a little bit late

Sailors jockey for the fast lane
101 dont miss it
Rolling hills and concrete fields
The broken lines on your mind

Eights go east and the fives go north
The merging nexus back and forth
You see your sign, cross the line,
Signalling with a blink

The radios gone off the air
Gives you time to think
You ease it out and you creep across
Intersection light goes out
You hear the rumble
As you fumble for a cigarette
Blazing through this midnight jungle
Remember someone that you met
One more block; the engine talks
And whispers home at last
It whispers, whispers, whispers
home at last, home at last

5. GDTRFB Grateful Dead
Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad
Lyrics: Traditional
Music: Traditional

Played by the Grateful Dead from 1970 right through to the 1990s. Jerry Garcia apparently learnt it from Delaney Bramlett during the "Festival Express" train ride across Canada in 1970.

Chorus
Going down the road feeling bad
Going down the road feeling bad
Going down the road feeling bad, hey hey hey, yeah
Don't wanna be treated this a way

Going where the climate suits my clothes
I'm going where the climate suits my clothes
Going where the climate suits my clothes
Don't wanna be treated this a way

Going where the water tastes like wine
Well I'm going where the water tastes like wine
Going where the water tastes like wine
I don't wanna be treated this a way

When the song was being developed in the early 1970s, Jerry Garcia sang a number of additional verses. This from 6 November 1970:
My mother told me, "Son don't go down there"
Momma told "Don't go way down there"
Momma told "Don't go way down there, down there"
Don't wanna be treated this a way

And this from 29 April 1971 (thanks to Brad Dilli for pointing it out):
I'm going where those chilly winds don't blow
I'm going where those chilly winds don't blow
Going where those chilly winds don't blow
Don't want to be treated this way

22. Here's "Freedom Road (Leather On My Shoes)" by Chris De Burgh:
I've got leather on my shoes,
And I've got a dream to live,
There is nothing left to lose,
So I'm going,
I've got a suitcase here in my hand,
And I've got a hungry heart,
And I'm going to join the millions
There before me, on the freedom road.

Noone's coming to my door,
And all my friends are gone,
There's no work here anymore,
It's deserted,
And though I know I hate to leave,
From this land that I love,
There's a new tomorrow waiting,
Yes it's shining on the freedom road,
On the freedom road;

Oh sometimes it's going to be lonely,
Sometimes it will be sad,
But I've got to keep on going,
Until I hold that promised land
In the palm of my hand.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained or won
Without a hard fight,
We would never reach the sun
Without trying,
And when we're a million miles from home,
Out in the starry night,
We will see we're not alone
In the heavens, out on freedom road,
Out on freedom road,

Out on freedom road... out on freedom road.

59. I love their use of traditional instruments
I'm pissed about what happened to them because they were bringing a bluegrass sound back into country music and they attracted a whole new demographic before the idiot winger fans threw them in the dumpster. I was so glad to see them pushing it back into appalachian bluegrass stylings, it's been so twangy/tacky/midwestern-flashy/Reba McEntire-ish for way too long. Aside from what they did politically it was like watching country music commit hari-kari the way they treated these women when I think about what they could have done for country music had they been left alone. I didn't buy their last CD even though I downloaded some stuff off of it, but they aren't using the banjo and fiddle as much which to me is sad.

47. Born to Run - Emmylou Harris
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rms5v1IPgU

Well I never did crawl and I never did toe that line
No man is a master to me I ain't that kind
I just put on my traveling shoes
If you wanna win you just can't lose the time
Or stay behind
Well I was born to run
To get ahead of the rest
And all that I wanted was to be the best
Just to feel free and be someone
I was born to be fast I was born to run

Well I take the chances sometimes I've made mistakes
But you don't get nothing unless you take the breaks
Living as dangerous as dynamite
Sure makes you feel nervous but it makes you feel alright
Makes you feel alright
Well I was born to run
To get ahead of the rest
And all that I wanted was to be the best
Just to feel free and be someone
I was born to be fast I was born to run

Nobody's gonna make me do things their way
By the time you figure it out it's yesterday
Well it comes to he who waits I'm told
But I don't need it when I'm old and gray
Yea I want it today
Well I was born to run
To get ahead of the rest
And all that I wanted was to be the best
Just to feel free and be someone
I was born to be fast I was born to run

48. Rush-Fly by Night. From the early days
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbt9cEKJAcs

Why try? I know why
The feeling inside me says it’s time I was gone
Clear head, new life ahead
I want to be king now not just one more pawn

Fly by night, away from here
Change my life again
Fly by night goodbye my dear
My ship isn’t coming and I just can’t pretend

Moon rise, thoughtful eyes
Staring back at me from the window beside
No fright or hindsight
Leaving behind that empty feeling inside

Start a new chapter
Find what I’m after
It’s changing every day
The change of a season
Is enough of a reason
To want to get away

Quiet and pensive
My thoughts apprehensive
The hours drift away
Leaving my homeland
Playing a lone hand
My life begins today

60. I like this one - Old Plank Road
here is a band I don't know doing it on youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSfx0ctJA5U

I went down to Mobile to get on the gravel train
Very next thing they heard of me, had on the ball and chain

I'd rather be in Richmond in all the hail and rain
Then to be in Georgia, boys, wearing that ball and chain

Chorus
Won't get drunk no more
Won't get drunk no more
Won't get drunk no more
Way down the old plank road

Doney, oh dear Doney, what makes you treat me so
Caused me to wear the ball and chain and now my ankles sore

Knoxville is a pretty place, Memphis is a beauty
If you want to see them pretty girls, now hop to Chattanoogie

I'm going to build me a scaffold on the mountain high
So I can see my pretty girl as she goes riding by

My wife died a Friday night, Saturday she was buried
Sunday was my courting day, and Monday I got married

Eighteen pounds of meat a week, whiskey here to sell
How can a young man stay at home, pretty girls look so well

78. Steppenwolf - Born to be Wild
Get your motor running
Head out on the highway
Looking for adventure
In whatever comes our way

Yeah, darling
Gonna make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once and
Explode into space

I like smoke and lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racing in the wind
And the feeling that I'm under

Yeah, darling
Gonna make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once and
Explode into space

Like a true nature child
We were born
Born to be wild
We have climbed so high
Never want to die
Born to be wild
Born to be wild
