Poll question: How likely will I die in a plane crash this Memorial Day?
Edited on Tue May-15-07 06:10 PM by Writer
I have aerophobia, but I will fly to New Orleans to visit my family during Memorial Day weekend. It's four flights, actually, from Denver to Dallas, then Dallas to New Orleans.

I always think I'm going to die when I fly, especially during take-offs. So... tell me, my dears of DU, how likely will I die in a plane crash?

2. The take offs do suck! I feel like we just won't quite get up there.
You'll be fine though, unless...

;)

Relax and enjoy! Do like I do and get plenty of Bloody Mary's!

7. You hear wrong
A lot of things have to happen before a strike can happen under the Railway Labor Act, which governs airline contracts. They are not remotely close to a situation where than can happen anytime soon.

5. I too will be flying on Memorial Day
It would really suck if your plane crashed into my plane (which seems possible, since I'm going E-W and you're going N-S)... :scared:

8. I just today bought a movie called Memorial Day Massacre.
You can take this as a sign if you like. Personally, I think you have nothing to worry about. According to the movie, you stand a much better chance of dying if you teleport yourself back to the 80s, tease up your hair with enough Clairol to punch a new hole in the ozone, tuck your Lacoste shirt deep down into your pants, and go camping in a state park which is also the domain of a murderous caveman.

If you survive the drive to the airport, then you're safe.

15. I'd say zero, though you may very well die

of starvation flying a US airline, domestically. The major American airlines ('American' as in USA, not as in the airline by that name) have long lagged behind even the flag carriers of developing nations in terms of service and now they outright suck, as they have every year since they stopped playing coy scheduling games that deprived their overcrowded prisoners passengers of food and just blatantly quit feeding them, while changing the baggage allowances and excess baggage schedule for the worse.

The USA's airlines suck. And so does TSA, who (as proven during my recent flight, the first since I flew back to the US three years ago...I used to fly all the time but have managed to avoid it a while) have absolutely no consistency in their approach even within a single airport and who still seem to be dominated by utter incompetents. Airports in civilized nations still have better security than the US', and have dealt with terrorists for a long time, and none of them routinely put all of their patrons through the rigmarole and inconveniences that the US does now. I couldn't believe that it now seems SOP for everyone to remove their shoes at security checkpoints, a feat (no pun intended) that still ranks high on the list of all-time Shutting The Door After The Horse Has Bolted exercises. It used to be that the only people asked to remove their shoes were randomly chosen passengers named Hussein or Gump.

Between the greedy, incompetent, insolvent airlines and the incompetent TSA who're keeping US airports safe from running shoes, I absolutely detest flying within the US these days. I hope you have a good flight and somehow luck upon the only TSA employee who's got at least half a functioning brain.

16. Here's how you can GUARANTEE that you won't die:
1) Buy $2 million in flight insurance.

2) Name me as beneficiary.

That'll get you there AND home, safe as if you were in your mama's arms.

18. I've been gone all evening, but have returned to discover that the majority of DU'ers...
think I'll absolutely survive this. Well, that's assuring! Thanks to all of you for your kind support. :hi:

(That doesn't mean that I won't croak before I board the plane.)
