My 7 yr old told me today that everyone hates Jews.
This came up when he mentioned that one of his classmates is Jewish. He wasn't mean but rather matter of fact about it, as though he was quoting someone else.

I was so shocked I was dumbfounded.

When I got my wits back together I asked him where he learned that and he and his brother both said church. They have been talking about persecution lately, so perhaps that's where he got the notion.

At any rate I told him we do not hate Jews or anyone else and that we are to love everyone, no matter how they might be different from us. I am not sure if that little lecture sunk in or not.

Dang, but parenting can be tough some days. :(

2. Thanks, hon. I will be checking in with him tomorrow to be sure
that the little speech had some effect.

3. Navigating the parenting obstacle course is stressful at best
and downright dangerous at times.

4. Oh, big time. Especially when parents aren't on the same page on a
subject.

At least on this topic hubby and I see eye to eye.

5. You know what though, at least he talked to you
I'm sure the lecture sank in.

7. Your story reminds me of the time my youngest sister said the "N" word.
I'm 12 years older than her. At the time, she was in 6th grade, or something. She said that word in reference to one of the few blacks who lived in that town. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor, then I sat her down and talked to her about why that was a bad word, and why she shouldn't say it. I didn't yell at her or anything; she picked the word up from someone at school. But I've never heard her utter it since, so my talk apparently sunk in.

8. That word hasn't come up yet, but I hope to handle it gracefully when the time comes. Same for
any other derogatory term that might come up.

9. Well, it sounds like you handled this situation quite well, so I'm
sure you will do so if anything else like that comes up. And I like your idea of checking in with him again, to see if your talk sunk in.

10. Well it was shocking, and their dad was right there too so I had support.
His approach was a bit different but I think we covered all the bases by the end. :)
