3. I usually post in the Lounge.
I figured more people will know me here than in GD. I also know a lot of people here never go to GD. I put it in GD because it seemed like the relevant forum for that topic. Also, I did not want to preclude a "greatest" thread recommendation.

7. I just responded to that.
Courtroom evidence is not evidence for scientific purposes. (Yes, I am assuming that scientific evidence is the only real way to know something for sure.) It is used because it is the best a court can do. In many ways, a trial is more of a ritual than an effort to obtain objective fact.

Simply collecting anecdotes prove nothing because the individuals are not a representative sampling. Controlled sociological studies have more validity because they are standardized, but there is still an element of subjectivity and that is if proper clinical controls are used.

8. correct me in I'm wrong
Isn't scientific method merely observability and repeatability? Isn't that how scientists test theories?

9. Yes.
It is best to do it under conditions where one can be sure that only one thing is being tested. Granted that is not always possible, especially when testing people or observing conditions far away in space that cannot be replicated on Earth.

13. Not exactly.
The scientific method also controls variables, which is not the case for the vast majority of personal observances.

12. I agree, but the two concepts are not mutually exclusive either.
For instance, one poster tried to tell me that the average DUer knows more about politics than the average staffer on Capitol Hill. Now, that may be an opinion, but it's an opinion probably based solely upon the knowledge of the person who answers the phone, which is typically an intern or very-low level staff assistant. Arguing said opinion is, in fact, ignorant.

The only point I'm trying to make is that there are opinions that are flatly, completely, and utterly ignorant, and calling a statement an opinion does not give it shelter from that fact.
