Excellent episode, the return of Keith Carradine.

BUT WTF IS THAT STUPID SUB-PLOT?

Hotch is an incompetent leader? Gee, his team only catches the bad guy every time (ok, nearly every time).

To me it looked like a contrived conflict just because it was the season finale. Clumsy writing. It so didn't belong with the rest of the episode.

1. I only recently began watching it...
I only recently began watching it (and was a bit let down by Carradine's final... act of defiance). I inferred that Hotch's run-in with his boss(?) was a story-line I had missed. If this was actually the first reference to his boss's problem's with him, you're right-- it was sloppy.

We haven't seen her before or even heard her mentioned.

I think Carradine's character knew that was his only way out, since his leverage was discovered. Did you see the original ep with him? Damn. Creepy, and excellent acting on his part.
