I want to lose 10 lbs...Give me your ideas!
Ok, in all of my nesting frenzy and good cooking with Sniffa, I've gained some 'happy fat'. I'm only 5'2", and I'm near the top of the ideal weight range for my height. No shame here, I'm clocking in at 135 lbs, as of last weekend. I feel fine, but my clothes arent' fitting perfectly, and I'm not really into having a buddha belly right now.

So, without snark, could y'all give me some ideas?

Thank you! :hi:

7. Three things to cut out of your diet, should do the trick.
ALL processed sugar (a little fruit is okay), ALL processed flour (and pretty much any starch), and ALL dairy.

It sounds draconian, but you're a really creative cook--you'll still be able to come up with fabulous dishes to make. What I've suggested limits you to (lean, healthy) meats and lots of vegetables (and a little fruit). Whole grains are very good for you, but if you're trying to lose weight, I'd avoid them for awhile.

18. I PROMISE you, you won't die.
I have extremely wacked out hormones, and I had to cut those out as a rule to stay slim (I still cook for special occasions, etc., and eat what I want in nice restaurants). I was kinda tantrum-y about it, and thought it was the most horrible thing in the world, but it's been much easier than I thought it would. I've also noticed that I FEEL remarkably better without all the processed crap.

Has it been a gradual gain over a year, or fairly quickly, such as over a few months?

weighs me. I keep asking her if I can let her hold my change while I get on the scales. She never says yes. She always laughs at me. Now, I empty my change out of my pockets before I go in there. Next time, I am thinking about telling the lady I pay before I leave that she could get correct change if the nurse would hold my change while I get weighed. :P

32. Ride a bike for an hour every other day for one month.
Not a stationary bike. A bike. Being outside in the sun and air is a big part of the process. Do this every day, or every other day, for one month, and:

1. You'll love it and keep doing it.

2. You'll drop weight so fast you'll think you're melting, and you'll tone pretty much every muscle in your body.

Trust William. This works like a voodoo charm.

38. Limit carbs and exercise.
I gained weight too in the last couple of years of school and for me, being lax, puts it on easily. On the other hand, when I do what I need to do, I can take it off. My body is naturally super-curvy though and I don't just get under 145 (I'm 5'5"). I eat no sugars and get most of my carbs from limited whole grains, fruits, and veggies and pretty much have to keep it that way except for special occasions to keep from gaining.

Ultimately, I'm working my up to 3-4, 40 minute runs a week (with some core ab stuff thrown in). Right now, I'm only at 25 minutes walking about 1/3 of it, but I'm getting there again. :)

The South Beach cookbook has excellent recipes by the way.

42. Eat better, exercise more-- worked for me
Hey bi_baby, speaking from personal experience here, the ONLY thing that has worked for me to lose weight AND keep it off is to step up the activity level and cut back on the food.

Since November, I've lost nearly 25 lbs. I'm below 200 lbs for the first time in ten years. The only way I've done it is to go to the gym 4-5x a week (30-50 mins cardio, plus strength) and change my eating habits. I've cut out almost all fried food and most meat from my diet. I've started eating more fresh fruit and vegetables and also eliminated most processed food from my diet.

Join a gym and join a food co-op. It's a great combination. Good luck!

It can be a bit tough to do when in school (unless you have access to a refrigerator), but I split my lunch and my dinner into 2 or 3 little meals, so I am eating about 6 or 7 small meals a day. I eat every few hours, but it really works in keeping me full and not doing a lot of extra snacking. I predict that I'll totally tire of this little routine sooner rather than later, but it is working in the interim.

immediately put half back and no eating after 7 pm. Also no artificial sweeteners and about 10 minutes before you eat lunch or dinner eat a palmful of walnuts or pecans. Seriously. It takes about 10-15 minutes for your stomach to send your brain the message it's getting food, so it helps jump start that response.

64. Might I add the suggestion of using a luncheon- or salad-sized plate.
Visual appeal makes a huge difference, and I like the look of a filled plate. Using a smaller plate saves a lot of calories.

I also tend to go by the rule that half the plate should be vegetables.

65. Eat every other day for 10 days
You'll lose the 10 pounds comfortably. I do it all the time. Admittedly, some people try this but can't manage 1 day minus food, let alone 5.

Two keys to this

1) Stuff yourself on the Go days, to the point food isn't even something you want on a No day

2) Don't cheat. If you think you can eat a bit less on a Go day and then sneak in a snack on a No day, that ruins everything. You can eat until midnight, then zilch until morning two days later.

69. Eat a Big Lunch and just a Salad for Dinner every night.
That will give you about 1,000 calories a day and you should lose about two pounds a week.

73. 1,000 calories is not enough. Consistently eating so little...
will slow the metabolism.

I do agree, though, that eating a smaller meal in the evening works for lots of people (most calories for breakfast, fewer for lunch, and fewer for supper).

79. It works for me
The metabolism slows down but not that much. When I want to take off 10 lbs. it only takes me about three weeks to a month that way. I eat an energy bar in the morning, a good lunch and a very healthy salad at night. The pounds drop off very quickly for me that way.

70. Very simple. Take an evening walk. You don't even have to
power walk. Just watch what you eat, and walk three miles, at a liesurely pace every evening. It works.

71. I think it's great that you're thinking about it now at 10 lbs
When your clothes start fitting differently, that's a good signal that something needs changing other than just buying a larger size.

I think Atkins would probably be the fastest way, but increasing your exercise will probably do it without changing much of your diet.

Good luck!

72. 30 minutes of cardio every day
Try to eat less unhealthy food, but the daily cardio gives you a buffer.

74. As far as exercise goes, resistance training (weight lifting) is best for losing weight
Edited on Thu May-17-07 08:57 PM by Poiuyt
As you build more muscle, your metabolism will speed up, thus you'll continue to lose weight at rest. That doesn't mean that you should do any cardio, just be sure to include some resistance type workouts.

77. I've started doing this plate/dumbell workout as part of my fitness regimen recently.
As seen here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2367962

That should do the job. It's a hell of a workout, and you'll probably have to start out with something lighter than 45 lbs. I know I did.

80. I'm sure you've heard 'em all by now
so I'm sure I'm repeating somebody else's advise....basically, it's pretty simple.

Eat less, exercise more. Drink lots of water. LOTS OF WATER. Like a gallon a day. Makes a big difference, trust me.

:hi:

81. Work retail?
Maybe not, but I've found the best way to get in shape and drop pounds fast was pilates. You may gain a couple of pounds of muscle (that's a good thing) but it'll whittle your middle in a heartbeat.

83. I was forced to adopt a new diet, but it worked and I don' eat less
I had a cardiac near-miss a few years ago, and had to change my diet or
risk unpleasant side-effects, like death.

I had to cut out stuff I loved (ALL animal fats, so no ice cream, cheese,
red meat, etc.) and no more eggs. OK, that was the bad news.

The good news is that it IS possible to cook using olive oil instead of
butter, eat only 70% pure chocolate instead of the lighter stuff, and
sherbet instead of cream-based ice cream. Eating poultry and fish instead
of beef and pork was the easiest part of all, and I never cared much for
the heavily processed stuff or alcohol to begin with.

I dropped 7 Kilos (15 pounds--from 200 to 185, and I am male, 5'11") in
six weeks. My overall cholesterol went down by half--an added, and in my
case vital, benefit. Some people break down cholesterol well, and some
don't. It has nothing to do with being overweight or not. I drew the short
end of the stick on cholesterol, and it silently clogged my arteries to
where it came with a day or two of killing me. I avoided a major heart
attack by pure dumb luck, and the fact that I didn't ignore my family
history.

Even if your heart and cholesterol is fine, the diet has the same effect:
your overall fat intake will go down dratstically, and after w ahile, you
get used to it, although as I spend most of my time in Europe, avoiding
all that wonderful cheese I see everywhere requires massive willpower.

85. Give up sugar and refined carbs (anything made with white flour)
and limit the amount of whole grains you eat to one serving per day. Eat vegetables, fruit, and protein sources.

It really works, at least for me.

Wear lots of clothes and shoes during weigh-in #1. Be naked during weigh-in #2. :)

Or you could try more exercise. That's the only thing that works for me.

Then get a dog and go for nightly walks. I have been a vegetarian for 10 years now. I walk my two dogs every evening and I haven't had to worry about my weight for the past 10 years.

92. Do not eat less.
That is a bad thing. It triggers "starvation mode" for your body and you retain more weight because the body thinks it won't be getting another meal again soon.

Eat 5 or 6 small meals a day, but think healthy foods.

93. South Beach diet
you'll start off (the first couple of weeks) doing something pretty close to Atkins, and you'll drop 8 to 13 lbs. After that you'll introduce whole grain/high fiber carbs that will keep your metabolism healthy.

Of course, exercise is a must whether you're trying to lose weight or not.

To mix it up, try Rush and Anne Coulter.

You will never be hungry again.
