Who are the wealthiest and poorest members of your family?

One of my sisters is easily worth a couple of million $s. Another is virtually destitute.

1. Wealthiest, probably my son-in-law.

2. Immediate family: I'm the poorest.

I'm a musician...no more explanation needed.

I have a great Aunt who married into the family who owned Crane & Co. (stationary). She owns a chunk of Charleston, and has a place on a mountainside in Andorra

can you really tell. I suspect a few of my cousins are the wealthiest, but I can't be sure.

4. We're all in human services/voluntary association type work

So none of us are millionaires. But my sister makes good money, always has plenty to spare and even likes kind of "flashing it around", which I find irritating. Lets my brother and I know what most recent gift she gave our dad (I don't mind her being generous--it's the announcements that get tiresome), knowing we can't do the same. She's an MSW and administrator at a private treatment center, making better money than your average social worker. I sometimes refer patients there, so I know some of the treatment staff. They think she's the very best at what she does. So I guess she's earning it.

Otoh, my brother is right this moment worried he may end up homeless. I've offered to let him stay with me, but he has a job and strong connections in the city where he is. So, I may help him with rent. He works with land stewardship, organic ag kinds of stuff, but barely makes enough to live on. Loves the work, though, which I understand.

Cousins and extended family run the gamut, but, again, no real millionaires. Lots of teachers of all levels, some farmers (in a part of the country with GOOD farmland, so they're probably the most well off.), engineers, mid-level exec types.

Me, I fall somewhere in between. No trouble making ends meet, but not what most would call rich.

Poorest would probably be my uncle, who is on disability.

10. Poorest? Ooh! Me! Me!

Gave up my meager salary (writer) to be a stay-at-home mom and we have a load of debt to pay off, not to mention a house sorely in need of renovation.

Wealthiest...hm...I suspect my brother is worth quite a bit, but I'd never be able to find out. Also have a lot of older relatives who pinched pennies all their lives and worked during a time you could actually rack up a decent pension. I suspect there are several fat cats in the bunch.

but my cousin, who freeloads off his mother's rental property is the poorest. He makes his whiskey/cig money dumpster diving. He doesn't even get Social Security.

It's hard to say who is the wealthiest. If we are talking about step-family,then by far my step-brother is the wealthiest. He patented the idea of pre-mixed long island iced tea and made millions.

But if we aren't talking about step-family, I would say it's a tossup between my Grandparents and my Mother. They both own second houses,but I also know my Grandparents have about 100,000 in the bank. My Mother makes good money as an importer/exporter. So, I really have no idea.

13. Economically speaking, the wealthiest is probably

CMW's grandmother; the poorest is probably my favorite cousin, who just got out of treatment and is in a halfway house in Texas right now.

14. We don't talk about money in our family.

I suspect my parents are the wealthiest of our family (among their brothers& sisters). They still live in the first house they bought in 1963 (for 20,000) and they have never been into "status symbols". Both had good jobs and invested the extra money wisely.
Now they are enjoying their retirement traveling the world. They take two "big" trips a year and do some road trips in the U.S. in between. They just got back from a two week trip to the Galapagos Islands.

the richest in the family by far is my gay uncle, he's done really well for himself (I think it really pisses off the more conservative members of the family)

the poorest is my oldest sister. she has just made a littany of bad choices in life and for the longest time never seemed to learn from them.

19. No wealthy members of my family.

We're all poor folks, always have been. I might have extended twice-removed cousins that have done well somewhere, but none that I've seen or heard anything about.

Right now, we're probably the poorest. For most of last year it was Mom, the year before that it was my sister. It goes back and forth, depending on whose turn it is to get slammed with an unexpected car breakdown, medical crisis, job loss, et cetera.

21. None of my immediate family could be considered wealthy

One of my sisters is probably the one in the best financial position - she's a lawyer and has put money away over the years.

The poorest would be my daughter and her Republican husband from which I get a delicious sense of irony. He's a bum who doesn't work and who regularly squanders the money she makes on video games and electronics.

22. Immediate family...wealthiest is me. poorest is my younger brother.

Of course, he is slightly paranoid and likes to live "off the grid" by himself way out of town...sort of a young Ted Kosinski. So he's willing holding onto the poorest title.

When he passed away, he left $1,000,000 to the local Catholic church, his family made out even better.

The poorest? Another cousin who screwed up her life with drugs and alcohol.

24. Sister-in-law is obscenely rich

She made a killing in the Biotech/Pharmaceutical R&D field in the Silicon Valley. Luck, skill, and just plain being in the right place at the right time, combined with stock options and hostile take-overs propelled her and my brother from a very comfortable life to one of obscene consumption and decadence. They managed to raise a loyal republican daughter in the process. :mad:

Sister and brother-in-law, both CPAs, are very comfortable, and I'm happy to report they are not traveling down the obscene consumption trail.

The poorest members of our family must be us. Poor by some standards (including US Gov. measurements), but we don't owe a damn nickel to anyone. We are free and happy, yet poor. :shrug:
