The Matcom's Are Invading CANADA!
Edited on Fri May-18-07 06:38 AM by matcom
:woohoo:

ssoooooo it's been a stressful year for me personally so far. nothing too major but it's time to get away. Mrs Matcom was talking to our dear friends from Canada last night (BraceBridge (?)) and I said 'fuck it'. Let's book and finally get up to see them. (we meet in Mexico every year)

spur of the moment, I hopped online and we fly to Toronto from Boston on August 2nd. she was still on the phone with them when we got confirmation. They are 2 hours from Toronto out in the 'sticks'. We will have 4 days of RELAXATION.

Cannot WAIT to see the beautiful 'off the beaten path' countryside of our neighbors to the north.

that is if the Mounties don't stop me at the airport :D

any of our Northern DUers know of BraceBridge (sp?) and/or are close enough to pop by for alcohol poisoning?

:bounce:

4. Yeah, I know Bracebridge
and in August it's hardly the sticks. During the winter it's hillbilly central but in the summer it's cottage country and the noise of outboard motors is overwhelming.

6. Fairly nice town
Edited on Fri May-18-07 07:22 AM by achtung_circus
with an old central section. The heart of it dates back to lumbering times, followed by the era when the only way to get there from the city was by train. The cottages from that period are VERY pricey. Since the advent of the cr (and the 400 Highway) Muskoka is the place to be in the summer. There are a lot of touristy type crap stores mostly overpriced.

The scenery is magic. The area is part of the Canadian Shield, precambrian granite, gneiss and schist glaciated numerous times. This has smoothed out all the rough parts. The water is fairly good, the vegetation boreal forest.

A 2 hour trip from Toronto is very optimistic during the summer, depending on the day of the week you're travelling. Weekends are hell, and a 5 hou travel time is not uncommon. Stop at Webers, just north of Washago, for some of the best burgers you'll find.

When the outboard motors die down it's beautiful.

Can you tell I prefer canoes?

is pertaining to Federal legislation stuff like Customs and Excise (or internet porn). You will be under the protective wing of the OPP.

These cars are still in use but we are starting to see some in the "so old it's new" black and white.

Last year at this time we were in Niagara with the same couple for his 50th. Did the tour and brought back a case!! Even told the US customs about it, and he didn't feel like doing the paperwork so waved us through. I think I have one or two bottles from Caroline's Cellars left.

17. Bring Snowshoes
A winter parka will be helpful if you have one. And lots of warm sock to wear in your mukluks. Have you reserved your own igloo? How about a dog sled? You're going to need that to get around you know. Skates? Skis?

All kidding aside.........I remember when I was a kid seeing American tourists with North Carolina license plates driving this big-ass Winnebego with two snowmobiles hitched on a trailer behind. WTF? We do have hot summer here ya know!

Bracebridge is a lovely and historic town. I know you'll have a good time there. After all, we Canadians are so polite and accomodating.

traffic is going to be a possible nightmare i'm told. was hoping you lived out by Bracebridge. not sure about the trip back home. Guess we need to be at the airport early so an airport drink might be doable

32. North
and very slightly east. It's about a 2 hour drive at the speed limit. On weekends, especially long weekends, the speed limit is theoretical. I went north this morning and the city drivers were already on the road. I came down from Gravenhurst this afternoon and the traffic was doing 90 klicks northbound. Given one accident and it's 30 klicks.
