I was just standing there browsing in a store when I got hit by some lady on a damn scooter.

I have the nastiest bruise on my leg now.

3. Yes, and I know - I should be damn greatful that I can still walk

:grr:

I wonder if some go faster than that.

11. that's bullshit
just because someone cannot walk and is in one of those things does not mean they can drive around like maniacs going faster than pedestrian traffic etc.

I spent a year in a wheelchair and I paid close attention to those around me. Not being able to walk is not excuse for bad manners.

18. I never justified the person's rudeness in my response.
She got a bruise, and the person in the scooter is a jerk. There's no denying that, but at the end of the day, I'd take bruise on the shin over confinement to a scooter anyday.

You're not exempt from basic courtesy, even if you're handicapped. I hope she at least apologized when she rammed into you!

My FIL had one (briefly). They had to take it away from him after he knocked over a dining room table in his care facility.

I'm just saying that the ones they have are the equivalent of having a hot rod car.

17. The PC term is "people with disabilities".
So, people with disabilities should watch where they're driving with their scooters.

I'll have to ask my boss if she's ever left tread marks on anyone (goodness knows she's been tempted...)

36. I did...once
Street preachers in the only curb cut for a dozen blocks who refused to move for 15 seconds to let me up on the sidewalk. Told me to go around on a narrow one-way street with heavy traffic. I ran over them.

Most scooters are limited to 5 mph at top speed (store scooters top out at 1.75) which we don't always use. The exceptions to the 5mph are outdoor only scooters made for use in rough terrain, not indoors. They do a blazing 8mph.

Except for the street preachers, I've never run into anyone, been very careful of where and how I use it but that never seems to be enough for people. I've been pushed over, had shopping carts run into me and flatly been told that if I can't get there on my own legs I shouldn't be out in public. Period.

19. I don't care if you are pushing a stroller, either (as I have).
They are quite maneuverable so there is no need to expect me to completely yield to you.

I'll yield to a wheelchair regardless whether it's being pushed or the user is powering it; they can't stop on a dime. But a stroller? We can both move--I shouldn't have to cross an entire aisle for you.

27. I Hope My Brother Never Sees That
He's paralyzed on his right side, and he uses a motorized wheel chair sometimes. We are good old Tennessee rednecks, and if he saw that tank chair he'd want it some kind of bad! I shudder to think of where he'd go or whom he would run over.

21. Don't get me started on scooters
I'll get called all kinds of names.

I got hit by a lady on a scooter once too, and instead of apologizing, she backed up and said "Move it or lose it!" I've noticed a "fuck you" attitude among scooter drivers that isn't there with people in wheelchairs, motorized or not.

The woman who hit me was morbidly obese, but did not look as if she had atrophied muscles. My guess is she was angry at the world.

IMO most of those who use the motor carts at the store are just too fat and lazy to walk. Not the case as much with those who bring their own. :hide:

Edited on Fri May-18-07 03:05 PM by spinbaby
Really handicapped people who use a scooter or powerchair all the time are very good at navigating them. It's the people who don't really know how to work them and then get the grocery-store scooter which doesn't work right anyway that are dangerous.

33. We have a rash of people driving scooters in the street.
I don't know what to think of this. We also have a lot of people who walk in the street, so maybe it's just an extension of that pedestrian habit.

37. Look at your sidewalks carefully some time
Are there curb cuts to facilitate getting across streets or curbs high enough to take out the scooter motor? Are the sidewalks level and unbroken? Ok, how about just level enough not to tip over on? Are the sidewalks wide enough to accomodate anything more than an upright person on 2 legs? (Here in Charleston we have sections of downtown with trees growing in the middle of the sidewalks. Even push wheelchairs have to go out in the street because there's no room to get through)

These are things you might not think about until you have to navigate them in another manner than walking. Despite the commercials for places like the Scooter Store, insurance (if you have it) will usually NOT pay for a motorized chair or scooter. When you save up to pay the $2-$3k to buy one, you do everything you can to keep it in best working order.
