I'm watching The Deer Hunter for the first time...Ask me anything! |
|
Edited on Fri May-18-07 02:27 PM by bicentennial_baby
We were just talking about how neither of us had seen it, and here it is! Sniffa passed out on the couch though, so I'll have to fill him in on most of it...Damn, it's long! :o

|
Edited on Fri May-18-07 03:29 PM by doc03
and Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corp., it has been along time since I have seen it. It was also filmed in a mill town in PA, I can't remember where. One of my co-workers had a non speaking part in the bar scene at the beginning, the bar was torn down several years ago but this guy still thinks he's a movie star. Another guy drove for the stars he said you wouldn't believe the coke they went through on the way to and from the Pittsburgh Airport. on edit: Googled it and parts were also filmed in Clairton PA and Cleveland OH.

15. I worked in a steel mill just like it. |
|
summer job in college in the early '70s, same time frame. U.S. Steel National Tube Works, Lorain, Ohio.
I knew a bunch of guys that would vacation together, and drive to Colorado to go deerhunting.
I experienced the 24-bars and the Polish wedding, too.
The Vietnamese part of the movie is complete bullshit, though.

18. Best line in the movie: |
|
Hey... Hey, elephants! Look at those elephants! Elephants! Make way... I gotta get elephants!
It's not the line so much as Walken's delivery. I think it's right about that moment when he snaps.

29. That's the thing I remember about the movie |
|
That someone could be so fucked over by war and drugs that they'd do that to themselves voluntarily.
Extremely powerful movie-making.

But the torture and Russian roulette scenes are a bit hard to take. It's too bad that Michael Cimino committed career suicide with Heaven's Gate. I'm sure he had more Deer Hunter calibre movies in him.
