Ummm... Could I get a browser check...
Edited on Fri May-18-07 03:09 PM by Omphaloskepsis
I'm trying to make a lyrics website that only kinda sucks. Instead of all the ones now that completely suck. I have a somewhat basic layout done and was wondering if anyone would mind telling me if it renders decently in their browsers. I'm mostly concerned with IE. I have the Macintosh side covered. The footer needs to get cleaned up a little bit. The Latin in the middle will be dynamic and list Artist, Album, and song lyrics eventually. Maybe Monday, most of the code is already done for that part. I'm just concerned with things lining up and not looking all crazy.

And if you could let me know your browser and OS that would be fab. And yes, it is meant to be very sparse with lots of whitespace.

edit :: A url would be nice.... oops...

1. Let's have the url then
I can check it in Firefox 1.5.0.11, Konqueror 3.5.4 and SeaMonkey 1.0.5, all on Linux.

2. Vista
Firefox - center content is centered in the window - and all menus are centered
IE - center content is aligned to the left margin of the menus, which are centered

6. Firefox, SeaMonkey and Konqueror all the same as what DS1 said
for Firefox, not IE. This is on Linux, KDE 3.5.4.

XP to tell you this so you better appreciate it.

It looked fine to me. Everything seemed to be where it was supposed to be.

Oh yeah, this was in Firefox 2.0.0.3 in XP on my macbook pro. LOL

Here is a resized screen cap.

What software are you using to run the site and what did you create it with?

9. Awesome...
You rock.. That is exactly what I was shooting for. Holy shit... I didn't have to hack the shit out of it to get it to work in IE. I guess simple is best.

Thanks for the screen shot. And now I tackle the Javascript, PHP, and MySQL.

10. Sorry I didn't see your questions the first time...
What software are you using to run the site and what did you create it with?

For hosting I am using https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/ I already bought a domain name. I playing in a sandbox right now. But, I will host it with them when I go Beta (lame Web 2.0 joke). It will be written in PHP with MySQL for the database.

I just used TextMate, CSSedit, and Cyberduck to get this far. This has only been about 6 hours of work. And I was really drunk for the first three hours.

15. Awesome
those are the 3 tools I use as well when I create a website.

Did you create it from scratch, or start with a template that came with the software?

16. I hacked the shit out of a wordpress theme...
Edited on Sat May-19-07 11:14 PM by Omphaloskepsis
It was GPL so I decided to save some work.

I just snagged some things from the CSS file (mostly text
based stuff). About five percent is the same. All of the
XHTML, PHP, MySQL, and Javascript stuff was done by me in
TextMate. Well, most of that isn't working yet. But, I did
hook up the database today. In the morning I will get so you
can actually view lyrics. Right now you can only see a list of
Artist that start with a certain letter. And that letter is
"H". One artist. I just wanted to make sure I could
talk to the database.

Most of my day was spent working on "Pretty URLs."
As it is now you would see something like:

http://myblog1.nfshost.com/lyrics/lyrics.php?alph=H&artist=Hot%20Water%20Music&album&No%20Division&song=Free%20Radio%20Gainesville

I want the URL to be:

http://myblog1.nfshost.com/lyrics/H/Hot-Water-Music/No-Division/Free-Radio-Gainesville

The second looks much better... This is giving me trouble.

21. If you want to make this a lot easier
I have a suggestion.

Use Nucleus.

I am sure there is a template you can customize that will hvae most of the work done already. I use it and it is amazingly simple.

http://nucleuscms.org/

PLUS, it is free and open source.

22. I had thought about using a CMS..
Most of the ones I have used (I'm looking at you Drupal) are so bloated that it is easier to write simple apps from scratch. And this is in fact very simple. And I am trying to keep the size down. Right now the average page size is 8K. I only have one small image right now and I plan on keeping it that way.

I tried making this a few years ago so most of the back end stuff is already written. All of the SQL is already done. It needs to be cleaned up but it is functional. The last time it was heavy on AJAX and I could never get it to work in IE. This time there is only going to be a little bit of AJAX that will work in IE.

Today I will work on allowing users to switch styles. I'm thinking something like http://daringfireball.net/ a dark gray with white text.

23. Drupal sucks
I gave up on that a long time ago.

I find Nucleus very easy to work with but that may also be because I could never write a page from scratch to save my life.

Luckily someone has written up something on how to do just about everything. For switching themes I am using this.

The hard part is done with that.

17. It's great for all those times I'll need the lyrics to "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet"
Apparently not so much so for any other songs.

Okay.

Specializing is good.

18. I'm going to assume that is a joke.
My request was to check the CSS. Which was done (thanks to all). I am pleased with the result. I used the normal dummy text to check the layout.

Your website looks fine. I got no data messages with one click on all the lookups except H, which of course took two clicks

I only populated the database with music by Hot Water Music. Sounds like thing are working as expected. The error is intentional.
