Yay! A bird found our feeder!
Well, not exactly, it found the seed that spilled on the porch when it got knocked off the door last week, and it ate up! And then, it came back a few hours later for more! Now, he/she just has to go tell his/her buddies, and we're in business!

A covered porch is nice for birdies on a dreary, rainy day :D

10. I'm guessing chipping sparrow
Edited on Fri May-18-07 03:37 PM by BarenakedLady
They love my feeder. And they aren't as shy as song sparrows. These come right up to my feet if i'm sitting outside by the feeder.

14. Chipping Sparrows are the most often seen here where I am
And yes, like Barenakedlady said, they are quite brave.

I'm still a newbie. I live in a wooded area which i guess is one of the areas chipping sparrows like. Don't know but for me it was very cool to identify the first one. I was hooked.

8. I hung my first feeder a few weeks ago
It took a few days for the birds to notice it, but once they did they were constantly munching (and still are) I bought a book with pictures and have been having a blast learning about the ones that visit. They are very pretty to boot.

:)

13. Have you seen anything interesting?
I love to bird watch. I have three feeders within view of my seat right here. There are goldfinches out there right now.

18. Oh my! yes!
Well to me they are all cool. I guess my most favorite kind to watch are the indigo buntings (a little bluebird). They are pretty, sneaky and skittish. Its a challenge to get a good look at them.

Hmm, even the seed on ground brings different birds in here. I saw a yellow shafted northern flicker snapping seeds up off the ground. He visited for a brief minute then headed north.

I have a cardinal couple that visit daily, and lets not forget my nemisis... a loud alarm clock blue jay that visits near sunrise.

Fun Stuff!

12. Once you get them coming you can't
feed them enough. I fill mine in the morning and it is empty before noon, sometimes I fill it twice, the more you put out the more they eat, it's amazing how much food they can put away. The small birds eat out of the feeder and they spill out more than they eat then the other larger birds like crows, blue jays and starlings eat what is on the ground.

15. That's fine with me! I miss bird watching...
My parents live in a rural area, and their feeders were right outside my bedroom window...sigh. I had the first pileated woodpecker sighting of 2005 for Western Ma!

As long as the seagulls stay away... :o

23. I have a Pileated Woodpecker that visits
a stump in the neighbor's yard all the time. What a pecker he has, chunks of wood fly like someone is using an axe.

19. Hang up a suet feeder and they really get greedy!
This time of year, while they're feeding young'ens, they are desperate for calories.

Especially since I'm out of squirrel range (5th floor of a brick bldg). Maybe I'll pick one up tomorrow :)

20. I just got started on IDing the ones in my backyard,
but its quite addictive.

Theres a Eurasian Tree Sparrow (the first pic i attached) that stops by right after I fill the feeders and picks out just the sunflower seeds. My wife calls him 'the little shit' because he doesnt leave any of the "good" seeds for anyone else.

22. Ha! At least it's not a squirrel!
Those things can do amazing gymnastics to get at seeds and suet... :o

I hope they all start showing up...I love to watch birds just doing their thing :D

24. Its a regular party back there at times
and the neighbors on both sides have feeders too.

Ive had chickadees, cardinals, indigo buntings, bluebirds, goldfinches, and tons of finches and sparrows. Ive also got a mockingbird that comes by every evening at 6, scares everyone else off, and eats alone for about 15 minutes.

are a multi-tasker, watching The Deer Hunter, feeding the birds and on DU all at once.

26. My favorite website when watching the birdys
Its cool cause it lets you listen to the birds too. Also suggests ones close to what you think you see. It's graphic and pop-up prone, but once you get past that...
