Bumming, The Lost Art:
Bumming, or panhandling, is an art that is as old as man. You can read about beggars in the Bible. I would be willing to bet that it has been around since before written time. I'm sure there was some caveman somewhere who just didn't want to be bothered with going to kill a dinosaur for food, so he either begged or bartered someone else for some meat.
