Mine is book burning. I hate a lot of what's going on, but the act of someone burning a book...I imagine its how right-wingers feel when someone burns the flag. It makes me furious. I wouldn't even be able to intelligently discuss it if I saw someone do it. I would be able to rationally argue most any of the other disgusting things that go on, but that...its beyond the pale.

5. Don't be...my dog thanks you!
btw: I walk her every day, she is an elderly Pitt Bull who absolutely LOVES her walks. About a month or so ago we discovered another Pitt Bull in a back yard about a block from my home. Sadly this dog was malnourished, his ribs were stickin out and his belly looked bad. We went home and gathered a baggie full of dog-chow and a few milk bones. When I dumped this inside the fence the poor guy went nuts for the food and ignored the treats until AFTER the food was gone! I have repeated this now each day since that discovery. The dog is s-l-o-w-l-y gaining weight and yesterday for the very first time he chose to chow down on the milk bones first! I have my feelers out looking for a new owner here...I'll give this guys real owner a chance first...likely I'll go over, knock on the door and ask what's up. I have already alerted the neighborhood watch commander, (an ex-cop and fellow dog-walker).

There is another Pitt Bull related thread here in the lounge...my heart goes out to the horse, the horse's owner AND the dogs. I am in strong favor of laws which penalize the dog owners who can not find the time to control their animals. I know for a fact my dog would kill a kitty should she get the chance...I am trying to train this out of her. I love kittys as much as dogs...there will be no shenanigans out of my dog if I can help it!

16. ....... I can rationally discuss things when I am freaking mad.
And nothing really makes me mad.

Well, except for two things:

1) How the popular media reports about science. Fuck you all.

2) People who think they know about science because of what they have seen in the media. Or on weird altie sites. I couldn't give a shit what site says what, because if you can't quote the scientific method, you have no right to make any claims about their methods.

In case you didn't know, the number one thing we all want is new things that we can't explain. That's what we're after. Take accusations of 'closed mindedness' and stick them.

If you don't know what agrichar is, a little research will indicate why I'm so unhappy with science reporting.

Ah, that was a nice vent.

I usually reply that if being "open minded" means swallowing any load of crap without serious inspection, then call me "close minded". When people say have an open mind what they really mean is DON'T THINK.

...jeez, here I go on a rant...guess it proves it really is my topic.

17. NBA Commissioner David Stern's handling of
Robert Horry mauling Steve Nash. Horry gets suspended for 2 games but since he's only used in very limited circumstances (shoot 3 point shots late in the game), his absence is hardly noticeable. However after the hard foul Horry committed 2 Suns players (Stoudamire and Diaw) both got off the bench...realized that their involvement would make the situation worse...and immediately returned to the bench.

The NBA has a firm rule if you leave the bench during a fight/imminent fight there is an automatic 1 game suspension. Stoudamire is the starting center for Phoenix, and since Phoenix is a small fast team...the value of his size is priceless. Diaw is the back-up center so his role is nearly as vital to Phoenix. San Antonio has 2 or 3 huge/large guys to neutralize Stoudamire/Diaw.

Stoudamire and Diaw were each suspended 1 game, which to me makes that game a freebie win for San Antonio. As soon as those suspensions were announced, I was thinking if this results in Phoenix being eliminated from the playoffs then we've got a massive controversy.

The playoffs are the bread and butter of professional basketball. To rob the fans and players of a great match-up like this is criminal.

I can discuss anything rationally. And really, nothing makes me angry...I just don't care enough. The only thing that even APPROACHES getting me angry is people who drive using cell phones, and thats only because I've almost been killed way too many times not to be. But most of the time I rant, I just do it for effect..I'm not really angry.

35. apathy toward the hard problems and lazer like focus on the shit that doesn't matter
I get livid when uninformed people tell me stupid shit like "it doesn't matter who I vote for, they're all the same". Seriously, how hard is it to take an hour out of your life to familiarize yourself with a few candidates once every four fucking years???

I had a big argument with a friend years ago over this. She can spend weeks researching carpet for her house and put aside 45 minutes every two weeks to get her nails done but she can't tell me the basics between Kerry and Bush? Fuck no. Needless to say, she voted for the first time in 2004 because of me and she voted for the good guy.

I once had a frustrating conversation with a man about the atrocities committed in Africa and his response was "God will work it all out"...um no, God won't and it's that lazy, apathetic attitude that allows for such crimes in the first place. Ignorance is annoying but I can understand it. I have no tolerance for apathy.

Arg. I'm getting worked up just thinking about it. :grr:

38. The 2000 election
At least, I can't manage to discuss the 2000 election with people who think there were no significant "dirty tricks" involved. Luckily, these discussions don't come up nearly as much as they used to. But this is one of the few matters that I can't seem to keep my "radical" views in check regarding. It had a very significant personal effect on me.

Oh, and I also am not good at rationally discussing the question of media bias with people who actually believe that there is a liberally-biased media (politically liberally-biased that is; I'm willing to concede that the media is biased towards their corporate sponsors quite liberally!).

46. The use of religion to justify some personal bigotry...
Example from yesterday: At my new (dead-end) job, a co-worker, a manager, and I got into a 'discussion', wherein the manager tried to explain why some people (herself included) might feel 'religiously justified' to believe that "race mixing" is (biblically) wrong.

The co-worker (who's bi-racial, and the only non-white working there) was livid that such a position could even be defensible, and asked more than once what she, as someone who "wasn't JUST white or black" was supposed to do?

Though i tried to give examples to contradict the manager's 'bible b.s.', by reminding her that by those standards, SLAVERY was still o.k., and that she should be at home and subservient to her husband, etc..., in a few minutes i found myself getting too angry to even communicate, and had to just leave the situation (and find some things to re-arrange in the cooler).

:grr:

I'm sure that this manager will eventually make the same comment about all of the queers on her crew (there are more than a few of us)...

I'm just waiting...
