I can't believe my boss today
I asked for a raise because I'm having a tough time making ends meet , my rent's gone up and gas prices are fucking insane ( didn't use those actual words ), and he told me to find another job if I didn't like it and in the meantime I was welcome to work for him.

I'm so mad I could cry !

1. I can't believe him, either!

What a slimeball. I mean, even if he really cannot spare another dime from the operating budget, to put it like that is just disgusting. I guess that's what you get when Corporate America owns everything, makes all the rules, and the resultant culture of meanness and number-one-at-all-costs is celebrated not just in such circles but in the design of dubious 'reality' shows that infest the airwaves. Even as someone who entered the US in my 20s, I have been around long enough and seen enough to know that it was not always this way, not as pervasively as it is now: this country is becoming less civil by the minute. :-(

So, yeah, it may be a buyer's market in terms of personnel, in many fields, but that's no excuse for plain rudeness and slimy behavior. I hope two things: (1) that you somehow get your raise, get moved within the organization (if this is relevant...I don't know what you do) to a better position, or that you find a better-paying job, or that it finds you, and that it's with a better boss; (2) that he gets a taste of his own medicine, one way or another, and in a big way. :grr:

Blue Jay, if salary negotiations were a physical matter, I'd hire some local tough to hammer out my requirements. I detest physical violence.

9. What a jerk
I've worked for cruel people (well, just one person) before too. Trying to keep it together while looking for another position is one of the hardest things I've had to do. I hope you can find a better-paying job with a more respectful boss soon... I know it is easier said than done these days.

Jebus. Usually just one of those is a job.
Are you responsible for backups and the network as well as janitorial duties?

My boss "gave" me more responsibility at the same pay. If they paid me what I'm worth, I'll be making $45:00 an hr. Thats 5X more than I make .

Yea, a cost of living raise would be very nice.

12. Start looking for another job, for your own well being.
Getting past the crude delivery of the info, the boss made it clear that your value to the company/organization is limited. No manager would EVER say take it or leave it if he valued the employee. He would have at least acted sympathetic and tell you that the money isn't there right now and discuss how and when a raise may happen. It will never get any better at that job as long as you report to the same jerk.

You'll never know if there's a better paying job out there, in a place where your contributions will be valued, unless you look.
Meanwhile,

Also, a word of advice for the future. If you asked for a raise because your costs are going up, that doesn't provide a business reason to increase your rate. You must demonstrate why you believe that the compensation for your job at the quality level you do it is worth more money. This is especially important the bigger the company or organization is because the manager needs to defend it to her/his manager and others up the food chain. It's also a good exercise for you because it helps you define your accomplishments for that newly polished resume..

15. I disagree with the last part (kind of)
I think it is reasonable for workers these days to expect annual reviews and cost of living (if nothing else) increases.

Obviously they haven't fired him/her for poor performance and i'll assume for the sake of argument, he/she has been in the job for a year+. Based on these assumptions (if I am correct) I think the reason for the increase is probably valid.

but then again, see my posts upthread ;)

19. It is reasonable to expect it, but in shitty companies they sometimes forget that.
Classic way to do it is to say that you're already at the top wage for someone doing X around here. I worked in a company that did that to the hourly employees while giving salaried employees an average of 4% raises and large bonuses. That one backfired big time when 75% of the secretaries and AAs left the company within a span of about 18 months because it turns out there were better wages out there. Karma is a bitch.

Your place sounds like a barrel of fun these days. Sheesh.

16. That's NOTHING Little wing.
A girl where I work (a tire factory) was driving a forklift and hit a pole which caused the lift to flip over on her leg crushing it. Her father worked in a nearby department and ran to her side as any father would do. When they got the truck off of her he headed to the ambulance with her as he was going to accompany her to the hospital. It was obvious she was going to lose her leg.
His supervisor asked him where he thought he was going. He said to be with his daughter. The supervisor told him he would be written up for WALKING OFF THE JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!
That supervisor is no longer with the company because for some reason his crews productivity was never the same after that night.

People need at the very, very least cost of living raises.

JUST being able to pay the rent, or groceries, or whatever just doesn't cut it.

Here's a hug  for LW. Keep up the faith, your boss is an insensitive, moronic jerk. His attitude will come back to bite him in his ass. :)

21. I apologise to little wing, my point being it could be worse.
I have come to realize that employees are nothing but another piece of equipment the boss uses to make money. If I dropped dead on the job tomorrow my boss's first thought would be about getting someone in there to fill in.

29. This guy wasn't my boss but he was indicitive of the people...
...my company hires as supervisors. I have come to the conclusion they hire people willing to sell their soul for the company. I have not met one person in supervision who could qualify for "human being" status. I am on staff in a non-supervisor job. I take great pride in the fact they have never approached me to ask if I wanted to be a supervisor.

22. Now that he knows your plight, you should bust your ass and keep your mouth shut.
Start looking for a new job and wait and see if your additional effort on the job is rewarded.

When you ask for a raise, next time lead into the discussion with how much you do for the job and any improvements you have made that will relate to higher productivity.

25. This is pretty typical.
That's pretty much the attitude of most bosses these days, it seems. I am job-hunting, and I have run into some who were just downright rude. I would hate to think what it would be like to work for some of them.
