Are stone tiles safe for the dishwasher?
I have two tables, the tops of which are made from 8"x8"x0.5" stone tiles. They are dirty and could use a more serious cleaning than a wipe with a rag, so I thought I'd run them through the dishwasher.

But I don't know if that's really safe. Will the soap pit them? Will the high pressure of the water erode them in a significant way? Could I just run them without the soap and let the hour long cycle of constant water spray clean them?

Any thoughts? Any experience?

1. I wouldn't do it.
If you have a restoration hardware near you, they make an excellent cleaner for stone, marble, granite, etc. I have used it to remove soot on the fireplace in the backyard and it does a great job with no discoloration.

2. "No" to putting them in the dishwasher.
the hot water and pressure would probably wreck them.

Go to your local hardware or tile store, and ask about which products should be uysed, and the products should tell you how to clean the tiles. take one of the tiles with you, especially if you don't know what type of stone it is; many stones are porous and can pit easily, so finding the right product for the type of stone is important.

Also, here's a quick article with some info:

3. Warm soapy water and a little lemon juice
should do it.

If you've got a particularly sticky or greasy patch, rub a little cooking oil to disolve it.

I thought you were talking about cooking tiles. Those I do put in the dishwasher since they can handle the high temps.

4. I think cleaning table tops is more a job for the maid than the dishwasher
Although if elbow grease is required, I suppose you could tell the gardener or the chauffeur to do it...

5. Thanks, everyone! I had a suspicion it was a bad idea.
