1. Paint Shop Pro is great
or Photoshop.

You can also try Gimp, which is completely free and a lot of people swear by it.

What is your main use of a graphics program? Illustrator can handle some things like text and graphic manipulation, but it's not really a creator of graphics.

It also makes a difference if you're using a Mac or a PC.

There are a few free ones, but very few have the expansion capability of Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro, though, and there are tons of plug-ins and filters that are interchangeable between them.

2. Did you say a lot of people swear by it
or at it? ;)

I'm sure it's very powerful, The Gimp that is, and I use it for simple things. But user friendly it isn't.

3. Oh, I can imagine!
I've never used it myself, because I got hooked on Paint Shop Pro initially and worked with that a long time before I got Photoshop. Perhaps the Gimp is one of those programs that should have a 500 page manual!

I have always liked Paint Shop Pro because it is pretty intuitive, and it's got a great help section. It also made an easy transition to Photoshop.

I designed web graphics and pages for a long time, but right now I'm working on learning more of the plugins and experimenting. I've had a lot of fun with it as well.

I used to be addicted to Illustrator and CorelDraw for their superiority in designing flyers and brochures, but I don't have much use of them right now. I will go back to them if the need arises.

I also collect fonts. I LOVE fonts! On my old computer, I had over 100,000 fonts, but I have to slowly build on the new computer. I'm probably at about 50,000 right now. As for the obvious question, no, I will likely never use them all, but it's really fun to look at them and to have choices for my projects. You never know when one of them will be just the one I'm looking for!
